Report: Oklahoma State Quarterback Garret Rangel Enters Transfer Portal
STILLWATER – Pokes Report can confirm Oklahoma State’s most experienced quarterback, Garret Rangel, a former four-star recruit out of Frisco (Lone Star), Texas has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.
It was first reported by CBS Sports.
Pokes Report learned just after the announcement the coaching staff asked Rangel not to enter the transfer portal.
Rangel is a two-year letterman who would be a redshirt junior this upcoming season. There have been two separate situations where Rangel was the starter for the Cowboys - as a true freshman and this past fall.
He was in competition this spring with TCU transfer Hauss Hejny and redshirt sophomore Zane Flores. All four quarterbacks, including Maealiuaki Smith, who went into the transfer portal earlier this week, all played in the recent Orange-White spring game.

Rangel played for the winning Orange team, finishing with 5-of-6 passing for 52 yards, and ran once for nine-yards. His teammate, Hejny, was 6-of-6 for 29 yards. Hejny ran three times for minus five-yards but he was cheated by the line judge with a couple of early whistles.
On the White team, Smith was 6-of-8 for 56 yards and he ran six times for 10-yards. Zane Flores was 7-of-17 for 76-yards passing with an interception on a hail mary” on the last play of the game. Flores also was cheated by the quick whistle on run plays and had seven carries for -29 yards.
Flores has not played in a game in college and we learned April 23, he actually has four years of eligiblity remaining as he was granted a waiver by the NCAA for missing last season with an injury.
Earlier this year, before spring football, I asked Rangel if he was considering transferring. At that time and believe me, things change, he said no.
“I like it here and I’m staying at Oklahoma State,” Rangel said. “I’m going to be the starting quarterback at Oklahoma State.”

This past season as a redshirt sophomore, Rangel played in four games, going 17-of-33 for 192 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He started in the game at BYU, and was having one of the best games of his career before he went down with a broken collarbone ahead of halftime.
“It was different just because we had two weeks to prepare where I was the guy for those two weeks because we had the bye week before,” said Rangel. “It was exciting being at BYU. That was a very fun experience. It was different. Something about that day was different. I knew I was going to handle my business and then it’s unfortunate the way it happened. It’s all part of God’s plan.”
He was part of a three-quarterback rotation in 2022, completing 59 of 115 passes for 711 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions. He played in five games in 2023, completing 17 of 32 passes for 172 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
