Texas Tech and Matt Wells Looking For a Starting Quarterback Heading Into August

ARLINGTON, Tx – Same as Dave Aranda and Baylor, Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells and the Red Raiders are looking to figure out who the starting quarterback will be heading into the 2021 season.

While there aren’t as many guys who are competing for the spot, it’s still a tough spot to be in heading into fall camp without a sure starter.

The two guys are returning Red Raider Henry Colombi and Oregon transfer Tyler Shough.

“I think it’s obvious we need to play better in [the quarterback] room,” said Matt Wells. “I think top to bottom that room is better than it’s ever been in the three years I’ve been at Texas Tech. Tyler [Shough] got to Tech and practiced three in spring ball. I think the things he brings are very, there’s some things that are hard to measure. He’s in early, he stays late, he’s a football junky and he’s been a really good leader and fit in with our players almost immediately.”

In the 2020 season, Sough helped lead the Ducks to a Fiesta Bowl appearance. He completed nearly 65% of his passes for 1,703 yards and 16 touchdowns to six interceptions. He also rushed for 282 yards and two touchdowns during his 15 games as a starter.

“Henry Colombi won a few games last year in this league for us; he had a really good spring,” said Wells. “I’m proud of him and that’ll be a really good battle. The other two, freshmen, Behren Morton and Donovan Smith, top to bottom, that room is better than it’s been, and we all know you’ve got to play well in the that room to compete in this league and you’ve got to play at a high level. It’ll be as good a fight as we’ve had at that position since we’ve been there.”

Colombi is a senior who played in six games this past season for the Red Raiders. He threw for 1,065 yards and eight touchdowns.
