Barry Sanders to Get Statue and Inducted Into OSU Ring of Honor

STILLWATER – It’s been a long time coming, but Barry Sanders is finally getting a statue. Oklahoma State announced Thursday morning it would be honoring the Cowboy great by inducting him into the Ring of Honor. The ceremony will take place during the game against TCU on November 13.

The statue, which is currently being worked on by Harold Holden, the same sculptor who created the statue of Boone Pickens, will be featured outside the stadium.

Sanders will be the second Cowboy to be inducted into the Ring of Honor, as he joins fellow running back, teammate and NFL Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas, who was inducted during halftime of the West Virginia game in 2020.

Sanders was one of the most dominant college football players of all time. During the 1988 season, Sanders earned unanimous first-team All-America honors and became Oklahoma State’s only Heisman Trophy winner.

During that season, he rushed for 2,628 yards and 37 touchdowns, averaged 236.5 rushing yards per game, 7.6 yards per carry, 44 total touchdowns. He had four games with at least 300 yards rushing and a three-game span where he rushed for 937 yards and 13 touchdowns against Kansas, Iowa State and Texas Tech.

Sanders’ iconic No. 21 is one of just four numbers retired by Oklahoma State.

LONG overdue! Should've been the first inducted into the RoH, but it's possible they were waiting to do so until the statue was ready. Either way, very glad it's happening.
