STILLWATER – The fourth-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team took down Columbia, 35-6, in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Sunday afternoon in a match that was originally scheduled to take place in Morgantown, W.V.

The Cowboys took eight of the 10 matches in the dual, with six Cowboys earning bonus-point wins by way of three major decisions, a technical fall and two pins.

“I thought the effort was good. I didn’t think we wrestled great,” head coach John Smith said. “I thought (Trevor) Mastrogiovanni did a really good job of separating the score against a guy. Kind of sending a message out there that if you’re ranked No. 20 in the country, then you’re not wrestling with me. Maybe a little bit of a slow start with the takedown coming late in the first period and then I think he realized he could take him down and ended up getting a takedown in each period. That’s big.”

The Cowboys started quickly with major decisions from Mastrogiovanni and Daton Fix. No. 6 Mastrogiovanni picked up an 8-0 major decision over No. 20 Joe Manchio at 125 pounds and move to 9-0 in his sophomore season. Second-ranked Daton Fix (133) was dominant in his match against Angelo Rini as he picked up his seventh bonus-point victory of the season in the 13-4 major decision.

Kaden Gfeller returned to the OSU lineup after missing last weekend’s match against Little Rock due to illness. Gfeller finished off a 17-2 technical fall over Danny Fongaro in the third period with a two-point turn and riding time point that ended the match early. Since dropping his first match of the season to All-American Jaden Abas, Gfeller has rattled off seven straight wins.

Beginning at 184 pounds with Dakota Geer, the Cowboys closed out the dual with a bonus-point win in each of the final three bouts. Geer claimed a 17-3 major decision over Brian Bonino with five takedowns in the match. Leading 13-2 in the third period, AJ Ferrari pinned Columbia’s Sam Wustefeld for his second fall in as many matches. The top-ranked 197-pounder in the nation improved his record to 9-0 with two falls, two tech falls and two major decisions. There wasn’t much time between falls for the Cowboys as Luke Surber made quick work of Jalen Stephens with a fall of his own 58 seconds into the first period.

Wyatt Sheets (157) and Dustin Plott (174) each picked up decisions of their own in close matches. Leading 7-5, Sheets rode Andrew Garr for the entire third period to seal an 8-5 decision, while Plott had a late takedown to clinch a 4-3 decision in his return to the mat after missing the Little Rock dual.

Columbia took bouts at 141 and 165. No. 19 Matt Kazimir defeated No. 18 Carter Young in a 6-1 match as he held Young without a takedown in the match. At 165 pounds, Jalin Harper filled in for Travis Wittlake this week after bumping up to 174 pounds in place of Plott in Little Rock. Usually a 157-pounder, Harper gave No. 22 Josh Ogunsanya a competitive match, but ultimately dropped a 5-2 decision.

Oklahoma State will be back in action in Gallagher-Iba Arena next Sunday for a bout with No. 17 Lehigh for the second of a five-match home stand in the month of January.
