OSU Wrestling in First Place After Session I of Big 12 Championships

TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team wrapped up the first session of the 2021 Big 12 Wrestling Championships in first place Saturday morning, advancing six wrestlers to Saturday night’s semifinal round. The Cowboys’ 63 team points are nine more than second-place Wyoming.

OSU’s semifinalists include Trevor Mastrogiovanni at 125 pounds, Daton Fix a 133, Boo Lewallen at 149, Travis Wittlake at 165, Dakota Geer at 184 and AJ Ferrari at 197. Ferrari received a preliminary round bye and advanced with one win in the session, while the other five went 2-0 in Session I to move on to the semifinals.

The Cowboys began the day with nine of its 10 wrestlers in the preliminary round, going 8-1 with seven bonus-point wins. The highlights of the round came from Wittlake at 165 pounds and Austin Harris at heavyweight, who both secured first-period falls to earn their first pins of the season.

Mastrogiovanni, Fix, Lewallen, Wyatt Sheets (157 pounds) and Geer each earned a major decision in the round, while Dustin Plott (174 pounds) advanced with a 14-9 decision.

OSU was also impressive in the quarterfinal round, finishing 6-3 with additional bonus-point wins from Fix, Wittlake and Geer, who all scored major decisions against seeded opponents. Mastrogiovanni, Lewallen and Ferrari advanced with decisions.

The other three Cowboys in the quarterfinals nearly advanced as well, but fell in closely contested decisions that came down to the final whistle as Sheets, Plott and Harris dropped into the consolation bracket. OSU’s 141-pounder, Kaden Gfeller, is also in the wrestlebacks after dropping his bout in the preliminary round.

As a team, the Cowboys finished the session with a 14-4 record in individual bouts, including 10 bonus-point wins. All 10 wrestlers return to action in the second session, which is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
