July 8, 2021
5,815

The Big 12 released its preseason media poll for the 2021 season and Oklahoma State checks in at No. 4, with Oklahoma, Iowa State and Texas rounding out the first three spots.

OU received 35 of the 39 first-place votes, while Iowa State received the other four first-place votes.

  1. Oklahoma (35)
  2. Iowa State (4)
  3. Texas
  4. Oklahoma State
  5. TCU
  6. West Virginia
  7. Kansas State
  8. Baylor
  9. Texas Tech
  10. Kansas

The Cowboys are coming off a shortened 11-game 2020 season due to COVID-19 restrictions. They were 8-3 overall, 6-3 in conference play, and they finished the season with an impressive 37-34 win over No. 18 Miami in the Cheez-It Bowl.

Check out how Robert Allen of Pokes Report voted and the picks of Zach Lancaster and Marshall Levenson.

Mike Gundy and Co. have one of the tougher schedules in the country as they’ll travel to Boise State, Iowa State and Texas this season, while hosting OU in Stillwater for Bedlam.

As it’s been for a few years now, the league’s top two finishers will meet in the Big 12 championship game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. This year’s game will be played on Dec. 4.

okay Poke fans......

picked 4th.... are you over (top 3) or under (4th or worse) on that as our final conference standing?

I'm still on the fence.... I definitely think that our first 3 opponents are getting way too much love (that they're not really that good as far as opponents go), so I'm not sure what to make of the season overall. As for conference standings.... we're going to go as Illingworth goes, and he's pretty much a freaking rookie.

Well, Illingworth is good, has lots of promise and has pushed Spencer Sanders, but Sanders as we saw in the spring and as evidenced by being selected to go to Arlington next week for Big 12 Media Days is the starting quarterback. He has earned that coming off two strong games, having a really good spring, his first sincere learning period under the QB coach Mike Gundy believes in the best his program has had in Tim Rattay. You combine that with four solid running backs, a receiver corps that may not have a Washington or Wallace, but has a lot of depth to it where the ball can be spread around, and an improving offensive line where center transfer Danny Godlevske is going to make a major difference and the offense will be solid.

The defense returns lots of depth and experienced talent at every level. Jim Knowles is pumped over what he has for this season.

You also return three important specialists in Tom Hutton, Alex Hale, and the best deep snapper in school history in Matt Hembrough.

Good recipe, but I encourage caution. OU and Iowa State are behemoths this season. Texas has Steve Sarkisian, and TCU is going to finally make that comeback to the top of the Big 12.

Take the under and that way if it is better than you anticipated you will be happy. If it is what you anticipated then you won't be as sad and you can write back to Robert Allen and say, "Allen, you scum, you always over predict the Cowboys. You have no clue what you are talking about.

No believe meI hear what you are saying Robert but even with Sarkisian, Texas still does not have an established Quarterback, and that has become an important factor in the last five or six years in this league. Also, TCU does have questions along their offensive line, which we saw what that can do to a team, see OSU in 2020 even though they brought Mecham back who has had success as a play caller. OU and Iowa State appear on paper to be the top two in the league.

I'm not a fence sitter - I'm all in every year. Give me that Orange KoolAid, and then give me another. I despise the sewerners, but recognize that until we knock them off & out, they will sit at the top. I'm not sold on I-State yet, and I'm NEVER sold on the Whorns. I respect TCU, but this isn't their year. Nor is it for K-State or the 'Eers. Go Pokes! Come ON, Sept 4th!

I hear ya, Robert - but..... I'll take the over and if at the end of the season it happens that we weren't as good as I thought, well..... been there before and I ain't died over it. Yet. And there won't be any laying of blame at RA's feet. This year or any other. Go Pokes!

Although quite disappointing to me, fourth seems about right given our level of play the last few years. Until our offensive play calling becomes less predictable and our offensive line can block someone, I see us as a pretty average Big XII team. Our defense should be pretty good but not dominant, particularly if the offense can't sustain possessions.

I absolutely love what you do for us Robert, but I'm not buying one bit of that crap you just posted.

Gundy picked Sanders, Rattay... blah, blah, blah.... Sanders has gotten hurt, out for multiple games or the season hurt, in 4 of his last 5 seasons, the other season he sat the bench behind Corndog, a walk on.

I don't know if Sanders is good, or not good. Improved or not improved, but I'll bet a pizza that he won't finish the season. We should be using him like Walsh, and move on with the better QB, even if he's not perfect yet.

That's my opinion. I don't care about Sanders, he won't be in the lineup. Bank on it.

Boise will not be as good with the coach going to Auburn and Texas is trash. Absolute wipe your rear end trash. I think this team is like the 15' team over achievers. 10-2 Big 12 Championship Game

I'm in the over because I'm a believer that Coach Dickey will over achieve and give us an above average plus OL. Add that to our overall offensive talent, our best defense in the Gundy years and the fact HCMG has the ISU coaches number......and I see us having one or two losses PRIOR to a bowl game. But I think we need to be aware of UT. I'm afraid they have a guy at qb who will shine big this year in Casey Thompson. Hope I'm wrong....but he looks like a handful to me (but not extremely experienced obviously).
