Players Surprise Mike Gundy With Cake After Practice
STILLWATER – There’s nothing quite like showing up to work and having your coworkers remember your birthday, let alone celebrate it.
Well, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy had both.
Following the first practice in full pads on Thursday, a group of players interrupted the media availability with a rousing rendition of happy birthday and presented coach Gundy with a cake for his 54th birthday.
It’s hard to imagine the ‘I’m a man’ speech took place 14 years ago.
When asked about the players dropping by with a cake and singing happy birthday, Mike gave a very Gundy answer.
“[The players] like to give me a hard time. I’m at the age, you’re a long ways, but I’m at the age you don’t really look forward to birthdays anymore. It’s been 41 years since I’ve actually had a birthday that I wasn’t at a practice because it started in seventh grade. So, it’s been 41 years, which I guess is a good thing. But you kind of like those [birthdays] to just kind of slide on by. Once you get up twice in a night to go to the bathroom, you’ll understand.”
Not as many players had a piece after practice as I expected, it looks like just Spencer, Tre and Brennan, but Gundy offered three or four media members a piece and I’ll be the first to say it was pretty dang good.
