Gundy: Safety Tre Sterling Is Out for the Season
Oklahoma State suffered a big loss Saturday night as Mike Gundy announced after the 21-20 win over Boise State safety Tre Sterling is done for the year with a season-ending injury.
Sterling did not play in the Boise State game.
“Tre [Sterling] is done for the year,” head coach Mike Gundy told the media following the win over Boise State.
However, Sterling probably has the best back up in the country at just about any position, certainly the safety position, in Jason Taylor II, the redshirt junior out of Carl Albert in Oklahoma City, OK.
He finished the Boise State game with four total tackles, three of which were solo stops, one quarterback hurry and a block field goal in the final minutes of the game to help seal the 21-20 win over the Broncos.
Sterling is a redshirt senior out of Sunnyvale, TX, who recorded 22 career starts before suffering the season ending injury. He has 154 total tackles, 97 of which were solo stops, 20.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, three interceptions, 12 pass break ups and two fumble recoveries. There’s no question he’s one of the best safeties in the country.
He had a pick six last season against Texas Tech, one of the more impressive plays of the season.
Taylor II had a great game against Tulsa last week. He finished with just one solo stop but had a pick six for the first score of the game, which was called back due to a cheap holding call on Tanner McCalister, then nearly had a second going into the second half. Last season, Taylor II had a fumble return for a touchdown that went 84-yards. He also fielded an onside kick against Texas Tech and took it for a score.
“Jason’s been in there, he came in last year at times and played quite a bit and gets a lot of reps,” said coach Gundy. “I hate that for Tre, and I hate that he’s done for the year, but that is a position we’ve got some guys. It’s not like we’re putting a freshman out there, like at wide receiver.”
As unfortunate and heartbreaking as Sterling’s injury is, there’s no question he’s going to make some good money playing professional football in the near future.
