Gundy: Safety Tre Sterling Is Out for the Season

Oklahoma State suffered a big loss Saturday night as Mike Gundy announced after the 21-20 win over Boise State safety Tre Sterling is done for the year with a season-ending injury.

Sterling did not play in the Boise State game.

“Tre [Sterling] is done for the year,” head coach Mike Gundy told the media following the win over Boise State.

However, Sterling probably has the best back up in the country at just about any position, certainly the safety position, in Jason Taylor II, the redshirt junior out of Carl Albert in Oklahoma City, OK.

He finished the Boise State game with four total tackles, three of which were solo stops, one quarterback hurry and a block field goal in the final minutes of the game to help seal the 21-20 win over the Broncos.

Sterling is a redshirt senior out of Sunnyvale, TX, who recorded 22 career starts before suffering the season ending injury. He has 154 total tackles, 97 of which were solo stops, 20.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, three interceptions, 12 pass break ups and two fumble recoveries. There’s no question he’s one of the best safeties in the country.

He had a pick six last season against Texas Tech, one of the more impressive plays of the season.

Taylor II had a great game against Tulsa last week. He finished with just one solo stop but had a pick six for the first score of the game, which was called back due to a cheap holding call on Tanner McCalister, then nearly had a second going into the second half. Last season, Taylor II had a fumble return for a touchdown that went 84-yards. He also fielded an onside kick against Texas Tech and took it for a score.

“Jason’s been in there, he came in last year at times and played quite a bit and gets a lot of reps,” said coach Gundy. “I hate that for Tre, and I hate that he’s done for the year, but that is a position we’ve got some guys. It’s not like we’re putting a freshman out there, like at wide receiver.”

As unfortunate and heartbreaking as Sterling’s injury is, there’s no question he’s going to make some good money playing professional football in the near future.

Unbelievable injury run this year. Top defensive line player (Ford), top defensive back (Sterling), top wide receivers on both sides, now two of top four tailbacks, this isn't the same team that came out of spring practice.

Not sure yet, but I'd imagine we'll know something in the coming days.

Heck, the injuries have been bad going back to the start of fall camp last year. You lose your starting left tackle who medically retired, they weren't injuries, but you have to cut two linemen during camp, then you lose two linemen in the opening game of the year, as well as the starting quarterback. And that's not to mention Chuba being banged up all year and losing Trace Ford at the end of the year, and once again during fall camp this year. This run of injuries is something I've never seen before.

Zach,

Can you list the guys that are out due to injuries, I can't keep up. Are both of the Green twins out? A short description of what happened to them and when they might be back would be helpful.

Thanks

As of right now, it's mainly the receivers who are the most banged up. You got Tay Martin, who's still dealing with his foot injury from a few weeks ago, and Jaden Bray. Honestly, not really sure what's going on with Bray, but they definitely could've used him last night. Langston Anderson broke his foot in warm ups at the beginning of the year and Braydon Johnson is dealing with a medical condition. Not quite sure what happened to Bryson Green, but he left the Boise game with an injury, and Blaine is dealing with a hand injury. There's also Logan Carter who's going to miss an extended period of time, which definitely hurts because he gave them the best chance at a receiving cowboy back (before Austin Jarrard gets acclimated.

On the defensive side of the ball, they lost Trace Ford to another ACL in fall camp, Collin Clay is out for quite a while. Then Gundy announced after Boise State Tre Sterling's out for the year with an injury. I'd have to think we'll know what that injury is in the coming days.
