Oklahoma State to Unveil Barry Sanders Statue Prior to Kickoff Against TCU

STILLWATER – It was first reported back in July that former Oklahoma State great, and Heisman Trophy winner, Barry Sanders was finally getting his statue and going into the Oklahoma State football Ring of Honor.

Well, the time has finally come. On Saturday, two hours prior to kickoff of the game against TCU, Oklahoma State will be unveiling the statue located in the northwest corner of Boone Pickens Stadium, then honoring him at halftime of the game with the Ring of Honor induction ceremony.

The unveiling of the statue is free and open to the public.

He joins former Oklahoma State great, and fellow running back, Thurman Thomas in the OSU Ring of Honor. Thomas was honored during halftime of the West Virginia game in 2020.

“He’s the greatest running back to ever play college football and if he had played eight more years in the NFL, he’d hold that rushing record too,” said head coach Mike Gundy. “It’s nice that we have his statue up and it’s nice that we have Thurman [Thomas’] name up. Now Barry’s is going up and a statue and that’s really what it should be. If you just think back to the affect that he’s had on this athletic department and this university, he deserves what’s going to take place on Saturday.”

Sanders marks the fourth person with a statue on the Oklahoma State campus, as he joins former OSU president Henry Bennett, OSU’s first African American student, Nancy Randolph Davis and OSU mega-booster, T. Boone Pickens, who had his statue unveiled outside the stadium with his name on it in Nov. 2020.

This will be the second time in the past few months Barry’s been back in Stillwater. He was in town with the Nissan Heisman House tour for the Baylor game, so head coach Mike Gundy brought him into the locker room to meet with the running backs.

“I was talking about how he walked into the locker room a few weeks ago and our guys were amazed,” said coach Gundy. “He won the Heisman Trophy 33 years ago, so the guys he went into talk to are 15 years from being born and they knew who he was, and it was a big deal to [Barry]. So, I think his presence of not even arguably being the greatest running back to ever play college football, maybe the NFL, I don’t even think it’s up for debate, still had an effect on those guys because they have the access to everything with their phones, so they watch all of his old highlights and they’re just amazed by his ability and what he was able to accomplish.”

I don't really know what your post means California Cowboy?? I have seen all of OSU's games in Stillwater except for 2 in the last 56 years and too many games on the road to count. I'll say he is best ever by a significant margin. Thurman is probably the closest to him in skill and I'm not just talking OSU players but, all I have seen.
OSU is blessed to have had their greatness!!

sorry, was probably a spur of the moment comment....

It is simply IMPOSSIBLE to grade players across decades, and even Barry's own father had a different opinion, so there is that.

Barry clearly had the best season ever of any college player.... and did okay in is first 2 seasons, and had an excellent Pro career at RB - but there are other players such as Hershel Walker that clearly rate right with the best regardless of measuring metric chosen, include college and Pro playing multiple positions in a season.

It all depends on the metrics chosen... I think Barry was one of the greatest ever, no question.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE - I don't want to be in a GOAT debate, because IMO, metrics matter. Look at some of these accolades for Hershel.

After graduating from high school as the valedictorian, Walker played running back for the University of Georgia, where he was a three-time All-American (football and track) and winner of the 1982 Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award. He is the only player in NCAA history to finish in the top three in Heisman voting in all three of his collegiate seasons. He is the first NCAA player who played only three years to finish in the top 10 in rushing yards, a mark later tied by Jonathan Taylor. During his freshman season in 1980, Walker set the NCAA freshman rushing record (later broken by Jonathan Taylor) and finished third in Heisman voting. Walker was the first "true freshman" to become a first-team All-American.

(after his astonishing USFL career) Walker established himself as a premier NFL running back in 1988, becoming a one-man offense, reaching his NFL career highs of 1,514 rushing yards and 505 receiving yards, while playing seven positions: halfback, fullback, tight end, H-back, wide receiver, both in the slot and as a flanker. He became just the 10th player in NFL history to amass more than 2,000 combined rushing and receiving yards in a season.

He was traded by Dallas for SEVEN players to Minnesota !!!!

After a single 2 hour practice where he studied only 12 offensive plays, Walker had an incredible debut against the Green Bay Packers. He produced the best rushing game by a Viking back since 1983 and the first over-100 yard rushing performance by a Viking since 1987, gaining 148 yards on 18 carries. He received three standing ovations from the record Metrodome crowd of 62,075
