A Tale of Two Halves: Cowboy Defense Holds off CMU in a Home-opener Victory

STILLWATER, Okla.– Boone Pickens Stadium was the place to be Thursday night as the Oklahoma State Cowboys secured a 58-44 victory over the Central Michigan Chippewas, earning head coach Mike Gundy his 150th career win. While much of the credit for this victory can be attributed to Spencer Sanders and the dynamic OSU offense, defense deserves some of the credit for its first half performance.

Coming off of last season’s stellar season, this year’s Cowboy defense carries a lot of expectations into 2022. Tonight, these expectations were met in the first half. With noteworthy performances from junior linebacker Mason Cobb and redshirt freshman safety Kendal Daniels, this defense was back like it never left, even with a new defensive coordinator in Derek Mason and the loss of Malcolm Rodriguez. Cobb and Daniels drew a lot of eyes during tonight’s performance, combining for 22 tackles, 3.5 of those for a loss.

The Chippewa offense fell victim to a first-half plundering done by the OSU defense but was able to finish with 546 total yards while suffering a 58-44 loss in their season opener. The game after halftime, however, was a little bit of a different story for the Cowboy defense.

Going into the second half with a 51-15 lead, the Cowboys’ shine started to diminish less than 50 seconds into the third quarter. A lot of younger players were “thrown into the fire” according to Gundy in the post-game press conference. This provided an opportunity for the Chippewas to come out swinging in the second half, scoring 29 points and providing a flash of hope for CMU.

There were notable performances from key players on the CMU offense in quarterback Daniel Richardson, who finished the game going 36-49, throwing for 424 yards and four touchdowns. This impressive performance was not enough, however, to stop the freight train that Oklahoma State’s defense has become over the past couple of months as the Pokes came up with four-straight stops with less than two minutes left in the game.

Finishing with 10 total tackles as a sophomore last season, Cobb hit that number in a single game tonight, finishing with 11 tackles, and will play a key role in the Cowboy defense from this point forward.

“We knew that we barely made it out of that game, we made a lot of mistakes,” Cobb said when asked about the defense’s performance tonight. Thankfully for the Pokes, these second-half mistakes were compensated for by the lead the Cowboys secured in the first half.

As a redshirt freshman last year, Daniels saw minimal playing time and did not record any defensive stats. While there were many mistakes in the second half, Daniels says that “it’s all easily correctable stuff, the effort’s there. We’re going to go in tomorrow, watch film and the coaches are going to tell us what we can get better on so we can get ready for Arizona State.” His breakout performance in tonight’s opener included a timely interception and 11 total tackles, which poises him as one of the possible defensive leaders who steps in this season to fill some big shoes.

Another notable performance from the matchup is that of redshirt senior linebacker Jason Taylor II, who finished last season with 40 total tackles and is evidently on track to blow that impressive number out of the water throughout the remainder of the season, finishing with 9 total tackles tonight.

While there is the remainder of the season still to go, these three impact players are just the guy’s Oklahoma State is looking for to keep up the defense’s reputation that a lot of players worked so hard to gain last year. If the Cowboys can figure out how to keep their early defensive momentum rolling throughout entire games, they will once again be nationally recognized as a team that is a force to be reckoned with.

Hopefully we fix lot of those mistakes by the time the big 12 games start. Benson, Harper both look lost out there. No communication between linebackers and secondary. Korie Black doesn't turn his head at all, the opponents will target him again and again. Lots of soft spots in the field. No idea why we were playing zone in some of the last quarter drives. Jabbar had average first quarter.

The offense balled. The running game was non existent in first 3 quarters, it maybe because the passing game was working too well. But the ball control was non existent. Time of possession by this offense will put a lot of pressure on defense. If we score too fast defense will be tired aka 2017 season. Sanders played one of his best game today. Etienne played average against CMU inexperienced DEs. He is not finishing his blocks. He is not mean/nasty enough. Good DEs will eat him up.

CMU is a good team, came with great plan on offense. But still we played below average to our capacity. The biggest improvement in a season happens between game 1 and game 2 most of the time. Hopefully we make it too

Lots of ugly pass coverage at times, the CHIPS quarterback was very good at finding the open guy and was accurate with his throws. We apparently were not able to make adjustments during the game on our coverages!

good lord....

the OLine was actually really good in pass coverage... really good, CMU had a very good DLine. We need to work on run blocking for sure.

The defense was almost perfect until we started freely substituting kids in the 2nd half. Run defense was very, very good. They schemed us pretty good with the quick outs and not allowing time for our DLine to penetrate. Our secondary needs some more time/experience, but we knew that already.

Nothing that happened yesterday cannot be fixed fairly easily.

Throw in the towel if you must, I don't think it's going to be our best season ever, but definitely better than 6 wins.

The oline can't run block to save their life. The CMU (MAC SCHOOL) Dline shouldnt be able to do what they did against a power 5 team. CMU feely moved the ball on the 1st team. Benson is completely lost and has no idea where to lineup. Bishop and Cobb are much better. If CMU can scheme us "good" what do you think Baylor is going to do or Kstate or OU. All of these schools have superior athletes to CMU. They have a LOOOOOOOONG way to go. So many missed tackles on defense its disgusting. Do they even practice tackling anymore since knowles left. It was bad..

ASU's game with Northern Arizona is worth watching. I can't imagine this is a trap game since our guys shouldn't have a big head after Thursday night. But this thing looks dangerous. Hard to tell NA's talent level with one game. They beat Arizona last year earlier in season but also lost to Montana late in the year.
What is obvious is Northern AZ got rolled by ASU which has about 50 new players supposedly. That seemingly makes it very difficult to know their overall roster talent. Their qb and running back look very good IMO.

They are very good. Unlike RA assumption that CMU is more talented than ASU. ASU is a better team of athletes and their QB will give us fits. I don't see us coming out with a win. We poured it on a not very good and young defense. While our secondary players didn't know what day it was running around the backend. It's gonna be close, I'm sure Sanders will have a 3pick game. He has had 2 good games in a row. Now it's time he come back down to earth like he always does. Gives fans hope, then just takes it always with a flick of his wrist.

CMU is better than ASU, and we kicked butt with out foot on the gas.... we only started to struggle when we tried to slow the game and run the clock out.

We could have beaten CMU 100-20 if we had wanted.

Northern Arizona is a 1-AA school.

for gosh sakes Poke fans, let's not lose sight of the basics.

does that mean we'll beat ASU? No... but, it does not change the fact that ASU is a team is total rebuild mode that has no idea what is about to smack them up side the head.

The starting defense gave up all those points. There were some 2nd stringers in there, mostly starters.

CMU is NOT as good as ASU. If you watched the ASU game they are waaay better defensively and offensively. It's not even close. The CMU team didn't even dang kicker.

You need psychiatric help!!! I attend the games, celebrate the wins, mourn the losses and then move on with life! I don't let the success or non success of 18 to 23 year old young men effect my life! I will text Robert some names of good psychiatrists in central Oklahoma and maybe he will send you a private message with the names.
