Phillips Crushes Home Debut as Oklahoma State Run Rules Loyola Marymount
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State smacked three home runs en route to a series-clinching, 11-1 run-rule win over LMU in seven innings Sunday at O'Brate Stadium. With the win, the 15th-ranked Cowboys improved to 4-3, while the Lions fell to 3-4.
Roc Riggio, Nolan Schubart and David Mendham each homered for the Pokes, who had five players with multiple hits in the contest. Mendham led the way with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.
With plenty of offensive support, freshman Brennan Phillips picked up the first win of his career with a strong start on the mound. The southpaw worked six innings and allowed just one run on two hits while striking out five.
The Cowboys wasted little time taking the lead as Riggio led off the bottom of the first inning and deposited the second pitch he saw into the bullpen in left field for his first round-tripper of the season.
OSU used a four-run rally in the second to take control of the scoreboard. Schubart led off the frame with his second homer in as many days, a towering 467-foot blast to left-center field, before Colin Brueggemann and Riggio brought home runs with RBI doubles.
Mendham opened the third with a homer just inside the right-field foul pole to make the score 5-0 before LMU posted its only run on a home run by Diego Baqueiro in the fourth.
Leading 7-1 after six innings, OSU ended the game early with four runs on five hits in the seventh. Aidan Meola got things started by ripping a double down the left-field line to bring home two runs, and Marcus Brown followed with an RBI double of his own. Up next, Brueggemann singled to plate Brown with the winning run.
OSU returns to action Tuesday with a road contest at Missouri State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
