STILLWATER – Oklahoma State men’s basketball coach Steve Lutz has added another assistant coach to his staff. Robert Guster, who spent last season with Lutz at Western Kentucky, joins Keiton Page on staff.

"Robert is already well-versed in the Cowboy Way, having worked 10 years under a guy OSU fans are probably familiar with, Brooks Thompson. He is a builder of strong relationships and defenses – two things that often go hand-in-hand. We'll lean on his recruiting contacts throughout the Midwest to bring in talented, high-character guys, as well as his ability to teach and motivate. Please join in me in welcoming Robert, Melissa, Alivia and Shiloh to the Cowboy Basketball Family."

Prior to his lone season with Lutz at WKU, Guster spent 2016-2023 as an assistant under Danny Kaspar at Texas State, where the Bobcats posted four 20-plus win seasons, which featured back-to-back Sun Belt Conference titles in 2021 and 2022, as well as the program’s first-ever NIT appearance.

“I really hope that Steve will bring Robert Guster with him from Western Kentucky,” Kaspar told Robert Allen last week. “He was an assistant with me at Texas State. He was the second of my assistants that Steve hired. The first was coach Shaw at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi and when Steve left, they made him the head coach. Robert is a perfect fit at Oklahoma State because he’s from this area and he can recruit Texas.”

During his time in San Marcos, TX, the Bobcats led the league in scoring defense during five of Gusters’ seven seasons, while posting a top-30 national scoring defense in three of those seasons. According to the Oklahoma State release, Guster worked primarily with bigs, where his group led the Sun Belt in rebounds per game and in field goal percentage in 2022.

His top player during that time was the 2020 Sun Belt Player of the Year, Lou Henson All-American, Nijal Pearson, who finished his career averaging nearly 20 points per game as a senior. He’s the Bobcats all-time leading scorer.

Prior to his time at Texas State, Guster spent 10 seasons at UTSA coaching for former Oklahoma State player, Brooks Thompson. During that time, the Roadrunners won a conference title, two conference tournaments and the 2011 team earned the school’s, not just the program’s, first-ever NCAA tournament win.
