Oklahoma State Pursuing Wyoming Transfer Guard Brendan Wenzel

STILLWATER – Steve Lutz is still in the early phases of trying to piece together his 2024 roster, but he’s starting to zero in on some talent in the transfer portal. It was announced this week that Brendan Wenzel, a transfer guard from Wyoming, has Oklahoma State in his top six schools.

Joining the Cowboys is Creighton, Mississippi State, SMU, TCU and Texas Tech.

This past season as a senior for the Pokes in brown and yellow, Wenzel started 31 of 31 games and averaged 11.6 points per game on nearly 41% shooting from the field. He also shot 38% from 3-point range, 81% from the free throw line and brought down 5.1 rebounds per game. He had 45 assists and 38 turnovers on the year with 24 steals.

Those numbers are up from the previous season as Wenzel played in 24 games, starting in 21, and averaged 7.9 points per game on 37% shooting from the field and 41% from beyond the arc, with 3.8 rebounds per game.

The 6-7, 208-pound wing spent the past three seasons with Wyoming after a mid-year transfer from Utah in 2020-21.

The other five teams Lutz is going up against are really good. Creighton just made a run to the Sweet 16, where the No. 3 seeded Bluejays lost by just seven to No. 2 seeded Tennessee. OSU fans know all about the talent and money at both TCU and Texas Tech, but Wenzel is originally out of San Antonio, TX, the hometown of Lutz and where new assistant coach Robert Guster spent 17 of the past 18 years at. So, there’s definitely a familiarity there that will help.

so likely a SF "wing" for us, since Thompson plays SG? Competing with Dow for minutes?

We desperately need a PG.... well, heck, we desperately need almost everything.

Thompson should be our point guard. That would be his position in the NBA. He can prove it this season at the point. He has a very good basketball mind and can organize the flow of the game.

Thompson has been horrible at point every single time that they tried to play him there.

he is not the person we need at point guard.
