STILLWATER – It took a few days, but Steve Lutz has officially named former Mississippi State assistant coach James Miller to his staff. Not only that, Miller has also been named the associate head coach.

"Wherever James goes, success follows; that is no accident,” Lutz said of Miller. “He's a winner, and I'm thrilled that he and his wife Darlene and daughters Mia and Macy will be joining us in Stillwater. James is as respected and well-connected as any young coach in this business. I am excited to work with him and establish a culture of hard work."

Miller marks the third assistant coach for Steve Lutz as it was announced Keiton Page is being retained and former Western Kentucky assistant under Lutz, Robert Guster, was announced on Thursday.

Miller comes to Oklahoma State after two years on Chris Jans’ staff at Mississippi State. Following his first season in Starkville, MS, Miller was named Jans’ associate head coach.

As Lutz said in the release, Miller is a winner and is widely regarded as a top up-and-coming college coach.

During his two seasons with the Bulldogs, they went 42-27, with one NCAA tournament appearance in the first season.

During Miller’s four seasons with New Mexico State, the Aggies won three WAC regular season titles, two WAC conference tournament titles and two NCAA tournament berths, which included a 94-26 overall record and 52-11 in WAC play. They also beat No. 5 seed UConn in the 2022 tournament, 70-63.

Prior to his time with New Mexico State, Miller spent one season as an assistant at Omaha under Derrin Hanson in 2015-16, one season at Arkansas State from 2016-17 and one season under current Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland at North Texas in 2017-18.

He spent three years as head coach at New Mexico Junior College before making the jump up to D1. In those three years, the Thunderbirds won 77 games and made three-straight postseason appearances.
