STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head coach Steve Lutz is bringing one of his players from Western Kentucky. On Friday, transfer guard Brandon Newman took to his Instagram account and announced he’s committing to the Pokes.

Newman, who transferred to Western Kentucky ahead of last season after four seasons at Purdue, checks in at 6-5, 200 pounds, and will have one season to play in Stillwater. This past year with the Hilltoppers, Newman had a solid redshirt senior season as he started in all 34 games, averaging 10.1 points and 5.3 boards per 25.7 minutes per game. He shot 40% from the field, 33% from 3-point range and 73% from the free throw line.

He was second on the team in scoring and in minutes, as well as assists with 55 on the season. He was, however, second on the team in turnovers with 58, but that number would be third on the Pokes’ stat sheet from last year’s, 39 turnovers behind Javon Small’s 97 and three behind Quion Williams’ 61.

Newman was also second on the team in steals this past season with 1.3 per game, and third with nearly two assists per game. He posted 19 double-digit scoring performances last season and was tabbed All-Conference USA honorable mention following the season.

Prior to last season, Newman transferred from Purdue, where he was no doubt recruited by Lutz when he was an assistant for the Boilermakers. In his 2022-23 season, he appeared in all 35 games, starting the final six, and averaged 6.0 points and 3.1 boards per game. He shot 36% from the field that season, along with 44% from 3-point range and 75% from the free throw line.

His sophomore season, Newman averaged nearly 5.0 points and 2.0 rebounds per game in 25 games in 2021-22 and averaged 8.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game as a redshirt freshman in 2020-21. He played in 28 games that season, starting in 23.
