The Cowboys are also ranked No. 18 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
The projections in the first polls, both the AP and the USA Today are good. Oklahoma State is in a starting point that allows them to work their way into strong consideration for the new expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. There is work to do. If you are going to have a chance to make the CFP as a wildcard entry, not the Big 12 Conference champion which would earn an automatic bye, then you need to be ranked in the top 10. You likely need to have no more than two losses if you lose in the Big 12 Championship Game or one loss if you are trying to make it outside playing in the Big 12 title contest.
The Pokes are coming off a 10-4 season in 2023, with a 7-2 record in Big 12 play. The season featured five-straight wins in conference play, including Kansas State and Oklahoma, an appearance in the Big 12 title game and a win over Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl.
The 2024 season kicks off against FCS preseason ranked No. 1 South Dakota State in Stillwater on August 31. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
