Report: Big 12 Looking to Possibly Add UConn to Conference
STILLWATER – Could we see the Big 12 expand once again in the near future? It certainly seems possible based on a report from Brett McMurphy. McMurphy states the Big 12 is considering adding UConn into the league, with football not joining until 2031 and all other sports possibly as early as 2026.
According to McMurphy, leaders at UConn met with the Big 12 last week in Dallas, showing the conference how and that they’re willing to invest more into football.
As it stands right now, UConn obviously adds a great deal in both men’s and women’s basketball, with the women being a long-time powerhouse and the men having won back-to-back national championships.
With Yormark being from New York, it would make all the sense in the world for him to want to add great Big East basketball programs to an already stacked Big 12 conference.
Sources have told Pokes Report TV networks would have to be willing to balloon the conference payout so each school would make more if UConn were added to the conference, not just enough to cover UConn’s share. The current member schools certainly wouldn’t be willing to take less money to add a school, especially one that brings nothing when it comes to football.
Now, UConn is right down the road less than an hour from the ESPN headquarters. So, it’s always possible ESPN puts a higher value on the Huskies than people realize.
It's unclear at this point how Dr. Shrum and Oklahoma State feels about adding a new school so soon after two years of massive expansion adding eight new schools, but our sources tell us it will come down to a president’s vote conference wide.
