Mike Boynton: "I Wish We Valued Winning More"

STILLWATER – We’re less than a week away from Oklahoma State’s first opening round game in the NCAA tournament in four years. It’s been a wild couple of years under Mike Boynton, with everything from FBI investigations to holding walk-on tryouts to form a practice squad to knocking off to beating five top-10 teams and seven top-20 teams since the first week of Feb. 2021.

“This is obviously a really huge step in our program, certainly under my time here as head coach” said Mike Boynton. “I’m excited to have this group playing in this tournament, for a myriad of reasons. It started from March 24, 2017 when there’s a lot of questions about me being the head coach here, to having to recruit this group not once, but twice and not knowing for a long time whether [playing in the tournament] was a realistic possibility. But we told the kids we’d fight for them – we did that – then they fought for us and they put themselves in a position to be playing really good basketball this time of year and I’m excited that we get to continue.”

The Pokes get to continue as they were tabbed a No. 4 seed, which is a solid seeding based on four years of not making the Big Dance. However, it’s a seeding that’s puzzled quite a few people considering West Virginia, a team the Pokes beat twice in the past two weeks was given a three seed.

Also because both Joe Lunardi and Jerry Palm had the Pokes tabbed as no lower than a 3 seed.

“The only thing I’ll say is I wish we valued winning more,” said coach Boynton. “I obviously say that with a slant to our team because to have the second-most quad-1 wins – we just introduced this as a major [ranking] factor – we have the second-most quad-1 wins, we played in the best league in the country, five of our seven losses are to teams in the tournament, we have 13 wins versus teams in the tournament, we won 12 games in that hardest league in the country and the gauntlet that we went through, and again that wasn’t anybody’s fault, we had the most challenging draw to finish the season that anybody could have. I don’t know how you look at that, and that’s why I think we should’ve at least been 3 (seed). I think we were closer to a 2 (seed) than a 4 (seed), but from the seeding list, we were closer to a 5 (seed) than a 3 (seed).”

As it is, the Cowboys have a rather solid match-up with a tough Liberty team this coming Friday. The Flames, led by head coach Ritchie McKay, is sitting at 23-5 on the season and is currently riding a 12-game winning streak that dates back to the middle of January. They’re fresh off winning the ASUN Tournament and are led by guard Darius McGhee, who was named the ASUN Player of the Year as he averaged 15.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.

“They’ve got a really good team; they may be the best 13 seed in the event,” said coach Boynton. “They’re really well coached; they have a disciplined style of basketball that they play. They have players who have not only played in this event, and we don’t, but they’ve got guys who’ve won in this event. That experience is certainly something to take into consideration as we prepare. They’ve also played really good competition in their non-conference to get themselves in position in case they had some stumbles in league play. They beat South Carolina this year, they played TCU very closely, they played in this event a couple of years ago and beat Mississippi State. So, I have the utmost respect for their program, and I know we’re going to have to really focus on having a good game plan and preparing well to give ourselves a chance to move on.”

Tipoff is scheduled for 5:25 p.m. CT on Friday, March 19 and will be televised on TBS.

Televised on TBS? Well, at least they didn't put us on the Food Network, or some other equally obscure channel.

Is TBS the colorized channel?

It is! Plus they put Kevin Harlan on the call, so at least the TV crew knows what's up.

I did not realize how off brand the March Madness TV contract was. Has to do wonders for carriage of truTV to be airing 10 first round games.

CBS has the rights, and those are all channels owned by Viacom/CBS. It's the only way they could get the contract away from Disney/ABC/ESPN, was to promise to air almost all of the games on their various channels.

originally, they use to show 4 games on CBS, by region (west coast got the west region, etc.) and they would use split screen to try and keep everyone up to date.... but that wasn't really good enough.

fascinating huh...

TBS, TNT and TruTV are ultimately owned by AT&T through its WarnerMedia subsidiary. My understanding is they get all of the games that aren't the featured game for each window because all games have to be aired nationally.

The business side of sports is very interesting. This agreement was originally done in 2010, hard to imagine but that was all the way back when all of our Football games weren't on TV.

yes, they have a contract.... with CBS

In 2006, CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., now a division of AT&T (T), formed The CW as a joint venture network

It's so weird to have to watch a basketball game on TruTV haha

I would much rather watch sports on TruTV than on ESPN+

Too true.

I really like ESPN+. It's better than games being in a hodge podge of locations or not available to watch at all. It's even better now that I can watch it through Hulu. I just wish it would let you have favorite teams and sports. Finding what I want to watch is more difficult than it should be.

They share the rights the same way Fox and ESPN share Big 12 rights. CBS didn't buy those channels.

ESPN+ is NOT TV.

and they do have favorites. I have mine set

I don't want to watch on my puter, or my phone, and I can't use my remote to pause when the wifey interrupts.

correct, they did not buy the warner channels.... but they had the original contract and combined drove the contract rights, which Warner did not have the clout to do (with no over the air broadcast). The first year of cable broadcast of the championship game was a total disaster (financially)

it's not quite the same as ESPN/Fox, where ESPN always has the first rights, but it's not worth further discussion.

The entire point being that the NCAA demanded broadcast of all games, and this is the solution they came up with.... as silly as it is. My recorder plays havoc trying to automatically find the OSU games to record.

CBS and Time Warner's Turner have secured rights to jointly televise the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship for another eight years, ensuring the two companies will maintain their hold on one of the most coveted properties in TV sports through 2032 more than a decade and a half into the future.

The two media companies will pay a whopping combined total of $8.8 billion for the right to provide live coverage of the popular tournament across any new-media platform, including any new ones that might develop over the life of the contract. And, despite low ratings for a championship game this year that was televised on cable for the first time in history, the NCAA said live coverage of the Final Four national semifinals and national championship will continue to alternate between CBS and Turner each year. CBS will broadcast the games in 2017 and Turner's TBS will televise them in 2018.

I like ESPN+ as well and they've certainly made it better, but I think they've got a ways to go before it's where it should be.

made "what" better? The broadcast is crap (cameras / angles / coverage) the broadcasters are 2nd tier and mostly goofs, not prime time talent, graphics are non-existent, etc.)

What is it that you think is "better" with a cheap internet stream?

(I'm not trying to pick on you, I'm actually flabbergasted)

ESPN+ is supported by all major streaming products, it's very easy to watch it on your TV.

From the response some wrestling fans have gotten with their complaints, it seems unlikely some of the more annoying things about the actual broadcasts will see any improvement since there won't be money in OSU's budget for it.

Still, I really don't care for the Flosports guys, so the chance to watch wrestling without paying them plus all the other OSU sports is a good deal for me.

thanks. I have no intent on connecting my TV to the Internet.

... and, hooking your laptop to display on the TV is not the same a broadcast..

Those things do not work for me, and my DVR recording / pause is cable based, and does not work the same for streamed events.

streaming on my TV is just not ever going to happen in this household, not for another half decade or so, anyway.

It's $30 to have a good experience with it. But keep on complaining about watching it on your computer to save that money.

naw, it's not about the money, my cable bill is already $200+/month, and I also have an annual ESPN+ subscription.

I'm not hooking my TV to the Internet.

The IoT is not ready for prime-time... the Fed Govt is in the process of releasing guidelines and regulations.
