Mike Boynton Signs Contract Extension With Oklahoma State

STILLWATER – It’s the news everyone’s been waiting for since the end of the season: Oklahoma State and Mike Boynton and agreed upon a contract extension, a source confirmed with Pokes Report.

"I'm very thankful to coach Holder for his initial vision back in 2017, and his leadership team, as well as President Hargis and the Board of Regents for the opportunity to keep building on what we've done so far," Boynton said. "I appreciate all of the fans, alumni and lettermen for loving this program so much, which has given us a story to tell recruits. I'm honored to continue to represent Mr. Iba and coach Sutton's program, and for the privilege of mentoring the young men who believe in our vision. My family and I are excited for the work that lies in front of us, and looking forward to celebrating much success with all of the great people we've grown to love over the last four years."

Boynton has signed a seven-year deal worth $3 million annually starting on July 1, 2021. According to the release by the program, it keeps in place the current pay structure, which includes the 25 percent voluntary salary reduction instituted last fall due to pandemic-induced budget constraints, through June 30. That keeps Boynton in Stillwater through the 2027-28 season.

"This is a great day for Cowboy basketball," said Mike Holder, OSU's Director of Athletics. "I'm reminded of Eddie Sutton's first news conference in 1990 when he encouraged our fans to buy their tickets while they were still available. That was good advice in 1990 and it is good advice in 2021. We're blessed to have a rising star as our leader and his team will make games in Gallagher-Iba Arena can't-miss events. Get your tickets, this will be a lot of fun."

After it was announced Shaka Smart was leaving Texas to become the head coach at Marquette, reports came out the Longhorns were interested in Mike Boynton. There have also been reports over the past few weeks linking Boynton’s name to his alma mater, South Carolina, should they have parted ways with Frank Martin.

So, it was of the utmost importance for Mike Holder to strike a deal with Boynton keeping him in Stillwater.

Boynton led the Cowboys to a 21-9 overall record, 11-7 in Big 12 play, during the 2020-21 season. That marks the best record for OSU since the 2012-13 season under former head coach Travis Ford. It also marked the first tournament win for the program since the 2009 season.

There’s no question as to the success Boynton has had out on the recruiting trails. He signed a top-20 class in 2019 and then a top-five class in 2020, which included the No. 1 overall prospect in the country in Cade Cunningham.

The Cowboys had a magical run the last two months of the season having knocked off seven top-25 teams in Feb. and March, including four top-10 teams in Texas, OU, West Virginia and Baylor.

Great! And should help him in his recruiting efforts, being able to pretty much ensure stability in his job and as their head coach. I hope the buy out moved up as well!

where is the freaking outrage?

This is more outrageous than the raise that Ford got!!

Why is not everybody pissed off?

$21 freaking million dollars for 7 years? The fan base should be up in arms.

torches and pitch forks. We've been there, done that, and it didn't work - now Holder does it to us again on his way out the door?

The guy probably deserves a raise - but this is freaking ridiculous for doing less than even Ford did.

Where is the equity?

Coach Underwood wanted a 6 year $18 million contract after 1 year of success here and we passed.

Coach Boynton wanted a 7 year $21 million contract after 1 year of success here and we accepted.

Coach Boynton definitely deserved a raise, but I'm worried about the contract length. 7 years is a long time to commit to a coach prior to having sustained success. It certainly appears that we just assumed a significant amount of risk. We don't know the terms of the buyout though, so it may not be as much risk as it seems.

I would say that Coach Boynton is more deserving of his contract than Coach Ford was, simply because he won an NCAA Tournament game with players that he recruited. That's something that Ford has never done in his 20+ years as a coach.

I would've been much happier with a 5 year contract, but I'm glad that Coach Boynton is staying in Stillwater instead of returning to Charleston. Hopefully he'll prove that this was the right decision.

I agree with everything that you said.... but I might add that it might actually be harder to make the dance with somebody else's players.... Coach B couldn't do it. Coach Underall did, Coach Ford did.

I would say that Ford was much more deserving, with post season in each of his first three years, and good recruiting.

neither here, nor there..... it is, what it is.

I think he's a good defensive coach, and a solid recruiter, I don't care for his lib lip. Wish he would just shut up and coach.
