STILLWATER - Oklahoma State football’s head coach Eric Morris was named the Paul “Bear” Bryant National Coach of the Week following OSU’scolossal 39-31 victory over No. 6 Oregon.
Morris led the Cowboys to victory in his first game at Boone Pickens Stadium and statistically outplayed the Ducks in most categories. The elite offensive mind helped spearhead a Cowboy offense that nearly doubled Oregon’s offensive output, 554 yards to 281. The Pokes netted 25 first downs to the Ducks’ 12 and played more disciplined, only getting penalized twice for 30 yards, while Oregon committed seven penalties for 66 yards.
The first-year Power 4 coach is known as a quarterback whisperer and that was no different with the Pokes signal caller, Drew Mestemaker. The redshirt sophomore netted 426 total yards of offense, with 317 coming through the air and 109 yards via the rush.
The victory marked Morris’ first win as Oklahoma State head coach, and it marked OSU’s first victory over an AP top-six team since defeating No. 5 Notre Dame in the 2022 Fiesta Bowl. Morris extended the Pokes home opener win streak to 31-straight, the longest active streak in FBS. Saturday’s game marked the first time in FBS history that a team snapped a 10-game losing streak against an AP top-10 opponent, according to ESPN.
Morris and the Cowboys return to action next week against Murray State at Boone Pickens Stadium.
