Oklahoma State and Cannen Cunningham Have Mutually Parted Ways

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State is losing its second Cunningham in as many weeks. Oklahoma State and assistant coach Cannen Cunningham have agreed to mutually part ways. The move was first reported by Marshall Scott. Mike Boynton confirmed the move on Friday morning.

Cunningham, who spent the last two seasons on Mike Boynton’s staff, was originally brought in prior to the 2019-20 season, but is leaving to help manage his brother, the projected No. 1 2021 NBA Draft pick, Cade Cunningham. Cade announced a week ago today his intentions to declare for the draft.

There were many people who believed the older of the two Cunningham’s was brought in to help land the younger of the two, the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2020 class. However, Cannen’s contributions extended much past his recruiting abilities.

Cannen, who played college ball at SMU, worked primarily with the Cowboy big men, Kalib Boone and Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe this season, and Cameron McGriff during the 2019-20 season. We saw Boone’s game develop as the season went along as he finished the season averaging 9.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, a near-three-point boost from his play in January.

With the older of the two Cunningham’s also out the door, a possible replacement is already being predicted. According to Sean Paul, a writer for MakingTheMadness.com, Boynton is looking to add Creighton assistant Terrence Rencher, who joined the Bluejay program around the same time as Cunningham joined the Cowboys back in 2019. Terrence has also spent time at New Mexico, Texas State, Tulsa and Sam Houston State and San Diego State. Rencher also played college ball at Texas from 1991-95.

Boynton and Co. recently extended an offer to Tyty Washington, a four-star point guard out of Compass Prep in Chandler, AZ, the No. 30 ranked prospect in the 2021 class who decommited from Creighton back on March 11. Certainly an interesting tie back to Rencher should Boynton make the hire.

I figured that when Cannen was put on staff that it was a short-term gig that ends with the departure of Cade. I'm sure that I'm not the only one that read those tea leaves. The good side is that it seems that Cannen really did bring some good things to the table as a coach, and was positive influence on the team. I wish them both good luck and great fortunes in the future. Go Pokes!

Cade Cunningham will make over $40 million on his rookie contract. He'll probably make over $100 million on his second contract if he becomes an all star. He'll make millions more in endorsement deals as well. He'll need people around him he trusts to help manage his career. Cannen (who has a degree in sports management) should fill that role perfectly.

I wish both brothers the best at the next level. I haven't watched the NBA much for awhile, but I'll have to pull for whatever team Cade lands with to have success. I would love to see him go the Thunder, but I don't think they'll be picking that early unless they trade up.

Terrence Rencher has played in the NBA and overseas. He's coached all over the country. I'm sure he has recruiting ties everywhere. He should really help with the recruitment of Tyty Washington & Christian Bishop. On the surface, he looks like a really good hire. We'll see if it materializes.

More surprised seeing Avery declare vs. Cannen mutually separating

Same, but the good thing about Avery declaring is he did so without an agent. I just can't see him staying in the draft. He incredibly athletic and has a high future, but he needs at LEAST one more season in college.

the list of kids that declared early and are projected to go undrafted is very, very long.... (supporting your projection of his return to OSU)

The list who have declared already exceeds several dozen. As players continue to enter their name into the draft ring, we'll continue updating this tracker below with our current projections attached. Please note that a player entering the draft does not preclude them from returning to college, nor does signing with an agent in many cases so long as the agent is NCAA-certified

Yeah there's a lot of kids that enter prematurely. Jawun Evans is the perfect example of guys who needed to stick around for at least another season. He spent a good portion of his last season injury, declared and got drafted super late, spent one season in the NBA and a few in the G-League and is now playing overseas. I understand financial needs, but there's a lot of kids who get super bad advice from people who they're close to.

I feel as if Avery entered his name to get an evaluation on what he needs to work on and will be back. That's the feel most people I've talked to have had as well. Should he come back, I feel that he'll be the face of the program next season. The last month he had took him from Big 12-known to nationally-known and could possibly be a first or second team conference player, especially if he makes similar improvements next season that he made from freshman to sophomore season.

yeah.... either that, or alternative leagues was always their destiny, and they might just as well get started on it...

there is no evidence to believe that yet another year in any program will magically make a player NBA draft worthy..... it's just a narrative spread by media types

No, but it can certainly improve their draft stock. Wouldn't you love to be able to tell your son to stay another year with Coach K.
