Oklahoma State Surges Late to Complete Upset of No. 14 Texas, 64-51

STILLWATER – After a tough loss to Kansas to start Big 12 play, Oklahoma State bounced back in a huge way to knock off No. 14 Texas in Stillwater, 64-51. The win marks the fifth win out of the last six over the Longhorns in Stillwater.

With the win, the Cowboys move to 8-5 on the season, 1-1 in Big 12 play.

The Cowboys were led by junior forward Keylan Boone, who scored a career-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor, 5-of-7 from three-point range.

Bryce Williams was next on the stat sheet with 11 points on 2-of-5 shooting from the floor, but he was 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Four of those came in the final three minutes of the game, as did his lone block.

The Cowboys finished the game on a 12-1 run that spanned the final 3:10 of the game, but the final 2:04 of the game was a 7-0 run with Boone and Williams combining for those points.

As a team, the Cowboys outrebounded the Longhorns, 36-33, while shooting 38% from the floor and 47% from 3-point range. They also outscored them off the bench, 26-24, and in the paint, 22-20. Oh, and they never trailed, holding on to the lead for 39:41.

It was a solid first half for the Pokes as they got after the Longhorns pretty good on both ends of the court, but especially the defensive end. Over the course of the first 20 minutes, the Cowboys forced 10 turnovers, the most in any half this year for the Longhorns, with five of those coming on steals.

Junior guard Avery Anderson III recorded three steals in the first seven minutes of the game. He finished the half with five points, three rebound and three steals. He finished the game with eight points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

After being held scoreless for nearly five minutes, the Longhorns hit two quick buckets to cut the Pokes lead to two, 11-9. That’s when Keylan Boone started to heat up. He’d hit a quick bucket, then answered a Texas three with a three of his own. He finished the half leading the Pokes in scoring with 11.

The Pokes’ scoring woes showed up at the end of the first half as they went on a 3:10 scoring drought going into halftime but did enter with a 30-28 lead.

As it was in the first half, the first two points of the second half for the Pokes came from the free throw line following a foul on Anderson III.

It was a rather low-scoring first 10 minutes of the first half as the Cowboys were up just 38-35 with 14:19 left in the game before Isaac Likekele was fouled and sent to the line with 13 minutes left. He sunk both free throws, then after three free throws from Ramey to get the game back within two, 40-38, Anderson III found Cisse for an alley-oop, followed by defensive rebound by Anderson III and a breakaway slam by Bryce Thompson, forcing a Texas timeout.

A few minutes later, the Cowboys extended their lead up to seven, 47-40 with 9:09 left in the game, but Texas got back within two a few plays later on a near four-minute scoring drought from the Pokes.

Bryce Williams and Keylan Boone stepped up big in the final three minutes of the game as Williams hit a layup to put the Pokes up four, 54-40, recorded a block on the other end, which led to an assist to Keylan Boone, who nailed a big three to extend the lead up to seven, 57-50. After a few free throws from Williams, Boone nailed another three on the trip back down the court, putting the Pokes up 62-51.

Two more free throws from Williams would effectively seal the deal for the Pokes.

The Cowboys are back in action this coming Tuesday, Jan. 11, as they travel to Morgantown, WV, to face West Virginia. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
