STILLWATER – Mike Boynton’s staff took a big hit Monday morning as assistant coach Erik Pastrana announced he’s leaving the program after two years.

It was also announced Monday morning Pastrana will be joining Mike White’s staff at the University of Florida.

"While Erik will definitely be missed, I am happy that he will be able to be closer to his family and continue pursuing his dream of becoming a Division I head coach," Mike Boynton wrote. "My relationship with Erik goes back almost 10 years and he has become one of my best friends. He is a terrific coach, recruiter, and most importantly, relationship builder."

A native of Miami, FL, Pastrana joined Boynton’s staff ahead of the 2019-20 season and was not only instrumental in the on-court success, but also in the recruiting success of the program. As the recruiting coordinator, Pastrana helped bring in a top-5 recruiting class in 2020 that included No. 1 overall prospect Cade Cunningham.

During his two seasons in Stillwater, the Cowboys compiled a 39-23 record, including a 21-9 record this past season, the best record in over a decade for the Pokes.

Prior to coming to Oklahoma State, Pastrana spent multiple years coaching in Florida with stops at Florida Atlantic, FIU and Daytona State, as well as time at Stephen F. Austin alongside Boynton on Brad Underwood’s staff. So, while this is a big hit to the coaching staff for the Pokes, the move makes sense for Pastrana as he’s from Florida.

"I am beyond excited to join one of the elite programs in all of college basketball," Pastrana said. "Having grown up in Florida, I am fully aware of the tradition and passion that comes with being a part of Florida Basketball. I don't take this opportunity lightly and can't wait to help continue the success this university and its fans deserve.

This leaves just one spot open on Boynton’s staff as he hired Terrence Rencher from Creighton in April to fill the spot left by Cannen Cunningham leaving the program.
