STILLWATER – Mike Boynton has announced some changes to the coaching staff, as well as two new additions to the staff as he’s added David Cason and Larry Blunt as assistant coaches.

Scott Sutton will transition to a new role on the staff, Director of Basketball Administration, freeing up a second assistant spot.

Cason comes to Stillwater after spending the past three seasons as the associate head coach at FIU. Prior to that, he was in the same role at Florida Gulf Coach, so he’s got solid experience recruiting the Southeast, the region former assistant Erik Pastrana was familiar with.

Cason during his days as an assistant at Texas.

He’s got a 25-year coaching pedigree with stops at North Carolina, Notre Dame, Texas, Tulsa and VCU. He spent time in Austin from 2015-17 after leaving VCU with Shaka Smart following the 2014-15 season.

“When it comes to versatility of experience, it doesn’t get much better than David Cason,” Boynton said. Coach Cason has coached at every level of college basketball. He has proven time and time again that he has the ability to connect, recruit, develop, and coach elite players for more than 20 years and has been a part of over 400 wins in his career. We are thankful to him and his wife, Tamara, for wanting to join us in our quest to take our program to the next level. His impact will be felt immediately by our players and staff.”

As for Larry Blunt, he comes to Stillwater after spending the past three seasons as an assistant at Drake, and Canisius for two seasons before that. He was instrumental in founding Orangeville Prep in Ontario, Canada, the same school current Cowboy Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe attended.

“Coach Blunt is an outstanding addition to our staff,” Boynton said. “His experience as an assistant at both Canisius and Drake, in addition to his experience running his own program, give me great confidence that he is ready to help us on our journey to build a champion in Stillwater. LB has recruited, developed, and coached some elite talent in his time coaching and has the ‘Let’s Work’ mentality as he comes in the door. I’m excited to welcome him and Morgan to the Cowboy basketball family.”

According to the release from the athletic department, “two of Blunt’s former Orangeville players, Jamal Murray and Thon Maker, were taken seventh and ninth, respectively, in the 2016 NBA Draft. Other notable players who Blunt coached at Orangeville Prep include Kyle Alexander (Tennessee), Daniel Cummings (ETSU), Jelani Mofford (UNC-Greensboro), Jalen Poyser (UNLV), Kalif Young (Providence), and Alonzo Walker (Kent State).”

As for Scott Sutton’s move to Director of Basketball Administration, “Scott has been a tremendously reliable resource with his experience in our profession,” said coach Boynton. “His last name is the foundation of our program and he has taken great pride in pouring his all into creating a championship environment for the program he loves. Scott will continue to be a valuable asset to us in the development of our players and in our defensive identity. I’m thankful to have Scott by my side on every game day as I continue to develop as a coach.”

Barry Hinson will also return to his full-time role as a staff analyst, “I’m so happy we are able to bring Barry back,” said coach Boynton. “There is not a greater example of Loyal and True than coach Hinson. He came here to earn his keep and prove his worth two years ago. He exceeded any expectations I could ever imagine and I’m glad we are able to reward his work.”

So Scott Sutton got demoted from a full time assistant coaching position to an administrative role? That's something I didn't see coming.

I guess our entire full time assistant coaching staff will be different next year. I hope our lack of continuity doesn't blunt our positive momentum.

very, very disappointing...

There is only one explanation... I realize that my comment is not going to be received well by the woke crowd.... but his statements and his actions are blatant and on display for everyone who cares to notice.

All I can say is that I hope what you're eluding to isn't true.

David Cason looks like a good hire. He has an extensive resume and recruiting ties all over the country. The decision to demote Scott Sutton in favor of Larry Blunt really surprises me, because Scott's resume dwarfs Blunt's. You have to wonder if Coach Boynton wasn't forced to hire him initially and now he's being given more autonomy with his staff after having success.

I think its a bit premature to just assume this is a demotion or even unwanted by Scott Sutton. First it's a new position, and we're not even sure what it entails. It could be one that simply gets Coach Sutton out of the recruiting treadmill, and some more time at home which might be something he was looking for. The position may be envisioned as the backbone of the look and feel of the program including budgeting, facilities, etc....

Moving from a full time assistant coaching position to an administrative position is almost always considered a demotion. That happened with John Cooper, and we quickly lost him to SMU. I don't think that Scott will be able to recruit or coach during games now. I can't see him choosing that unless he's burned out and ready to take a step back from coaching.

California. What are you implying that is so obvious to you?

Let's look at a couple of things before we go off insinuating that Coach Boynton is a racist. First of all, Boynton is our headcoach. He has to make the decisions on hiring, firing, lateral moves, recruiting and daily management of a large business. If he doesn't win in all facets, he's done.
That's the only black and white about it.

That being said, we do not know the dynamic of Coach Boynton and Scott Sutton. Now, Scott was mentioned in his statement as having the Sutton name carried much gravitas to the program.

Watching Coach Sutton on the sidelines never gave me the sense that he was having much say in the ongoing games. We all know he can coach, but perhaps Coach Boynton and Coach Sutton have just not connected like they should.

Any company can have brilliant business leaders that just don't mesh as well as they should. Both bring something good to the table, but after a while, there needs to be a change to make things better.
We don't know what the real reasons are for the changes in this case, but Coach Boynton lost coaches to other programs or for other reasons and this won't be the last change in his career here at OSU.
Coach Sutton is still a valid, respected and loved part of the OSU program, but just in a different way.
Let's let this play out.

Also, Coach Boynton is looking at recruiting top talent to OSU and he believes that these two new coaches add to that process. We've always had some problems getting a goodly number of top talent to OSU. When Boynton hires two coaches that have proven to be able to recruit top talent and also manage elite talent, then I believe this to be two great hires.

To me, Coach Boynton is doing everything he can to make our basketball program into an elite program. I love his energy, the way he makes adjustments during the game, his style of basketball which includes tough defense and the way his players hustle as well as play team ball.

I certainly do NOT see this as a racist hire or a demotion to Coach Sutton. I see this as a business executive making hard, unbeknownst to us, moves in order to improve this business for the good of the stockholders. We are wanting to have OSU basketball return to the forefront, right?!
Then allow the man to do his job the way he sees fit and wait for the results.
I know there are rules, but do we really want to follow them now?

I guess being asst coach when we brought in Cade, and now the 5-star KU kid, and the highest rated class in OSU history just wasn't getting it done....

I can't wait to see what these new coaches will do.... fab-five? 6-star recruits?

Yeah I'd say all those things are his goals. Coach Boynton is talking about National Championships, not just making the tourney.

One 5 star gets you a good shot at some pub and an entry into the tourney, but the teams in the Elite 8 usually are stacked with top recruits. So yes he's trying to make each or our classes going forward be full of 4 & 5 star kids so that we're in the mix nationally.

I don't think Boynton is some extremists letting politics drive his decisions. He's trying to raise the program up, and in basketball that means recruiting is key. Bill Self didn't win any National Championships until he got on the recruiting gravy train at KU. Yes, coaching matters as we've seen the all recruit no coaching guys fail time and again. However, for Boynton to be competitive nationally, which is where we want him to be he does need great recruiting. And since we aren't going to add money to the deal like a KU or UK do, and we can't add prestigious degree trappings like Duke does, we have to do it with good recruiters.

As for an administrative role, I seem to remember a certain Coach Dickey that took one and stayed for quite a while and was pretty beneficial to this program. Administrative roles are as big as the head coach makes them. So, once again I'd caution calling it a demotion. NCAA limits make coaches have to make hard choices, and I'd bet this was one of them.

Maybe Sean told him his gig at Tech is pretty good and Scott wants something like it?

NJAggie and Ostateman. You both made very good points. Coach Boynton is the CEO of his program. He has said many times he believes we can win a National Championship in Stillwater. After a few hiccups in recruiting his first couple of years he has elevated the quality and character of the athletes he has brought in. Any good CEO understands he needs to constantly be reevaluating his staff and players and if necessary, make the changes he feels he needs to make.

The Sutton name is important to OSU Fans. But, none of us really know the duties Scott will have in this new position. We do know he accepted the new position and didn't leave. Personally I'm glad he didn't leave. But as we all know, in major college sports, particularly for college basketball, assistant coaches come and go. I'm willing to respect Coach Boynton decisions and have confidence he's doing what's best for OSU basketball.
