Former Oklahoma State Golfer Viktor Hovland Wins First European Tour Event

It was a great weekend for former Oklahoma State golfer Viktor Hovland as he won his first European Tour event, the 2021 BMW International Open.

Hovland held off two-time major champion Martin Kaymar to win by two strokes, shooting a 70 in his final round to finish the weekend at -19, in just his second tour start.

With the win, he became the first Norwegian to record a win on the European Tour.

This marks Hovland’s third professional win in just 17 starts as he won the Puerto Rico Open and Mayakoba Golf Classic last year.

“I grew up watching mostly the European Tour,” Hovland said following his win. “There’s a lot of guys who played this week who I grew up watching. It’s cool to be a champion of this tour, in Germany, in a place that… it’s not in Norway, but it’s close and has some of the same feelings of being home. It’s a huge honor and finally Norway has a win on the European Tour.”

For his win, Hovland earned a cool $273,837.65.

Hovland has been an OSU fan favorite for years, especially after helping lead the Pokes to an 11th national championship in 2018. However, he’s quickly becoming a fan favorite in the professional ranks as well as he continues to move up the ranks.
