STILLWATER – If there’s one thing Oklahoma State doesn’t lack, it’s talented point guards. Since taking over the program, Mike Boynton has had a roster of talented point guards that includes Kendall Smith, Isaac Likekele, Avery Anderson III and Cade Cunningham.

Well, a rather interesting tidbit came about Monday morning regarding Oklahoma State basketball. According to a report from CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, Boynton told Rothstein sophomore forward Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe is going to play at the point some this season.

Moncrieffe certainly produced for the Pokes as a freshman. He posted 9.0 points a game, and his 51.3% shooting from the floor ranks sixth by a freshman in school history. He posted three double-doubles in a four-game stretch in January, averaging 15.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game on 57.8% shooting.

He also led the team in plus/minus per 40 minutes at +6.4.

He definitely has great downhill speed, can see the floor well and could certainly distribute the ball quite well his senior season in high school. However, something he’s going to need to clean up was his fouls and turnovers, two things that went hand-in-hand on several occasions last season. He’d get a full head of steam during a fastbreak and would lose control towards the end of the play and turn the ball over with a charge.

He was, however, fifth on the team in total turnovers in 2020-21 with 43, behind both Cunningham (109) and Anderson III (70).

The 2021-22 season at the point guard position is going to be interesting to say the least. Isaac Likekele returns as a senior, as does junior Avery Anderson III who will serve as the primary ball handler for the Pokes.
