STILLWATER – Oklahoma State basketball coach Mike Boynton has announced the addition of Mark Mitchell as the team’s director of strength and conditioning.

Mitchell joins the staff after a five-year stay at SMU, where he helped the Mustangs win an American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament title, and make trips to the NCAA Tournament and the NIT. 

Under Mitchell, the Mustangs garnered 11 All-AAC selections, as well as an AAC Player of the Year honor and an AAC Sixth Man of the Year award. SMU had three players go on to the NBA (Semi Ojeleye, Sterling Brown, Shake Milton) and several others move to professional teams across the globe.

Prior to SMU, Mitchell served as the director of strength and conditioning for the Stephen F. Austin basketball program, where he worked alongside Boynton. During his three seasons in Nacogdoches, Texas he and the Lumberjacks racked up a record of 89-14 with three NCAA tournament appearances and three Southland Conference regular season and tournament championships.

Before joining Stephen F. Austin, Mitchell served as a graduate assistant at Western Michigan. While at WMU, he served as the first assistant to head football strength and conditioning coach Nate Peoples, and was the head strength and conditioning coach for the men’s tennis team.

In 2010, Mitchell completed internships with the Ohio State football strength and conditioning staff (May 2010-Aug. 2010) and the Eastern Michigan sports performance staff (Jan. 2010- April 2010).

He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a Strength and Conditioning Certified Coach (SCCC) through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. He also has a certification in Applied Functional Sciences (CAFS) from the Gray Institute of Applied Functional Science.

Mitchell was a three-year letter winning defensive back at Eastern Michigan, where he earned his bachelors of science in sports medicine with a specialization in exercise science in 2010. He then earned his masters of arts in coaching sport performance from Western Michigan in 2012.
