Gabe Brown Helps Stillwater on Offense and Defense in Win Over Santa Fe
EDMOND – For the second week in a row the Edmond Santa Fe Wolves welcomed in one of the top ranked teams in the state. Last week it was Owasso and this week Stillwater, the third-ranked team in Class 6A-II was in to open their season against the Class 6A-I 4th-ranked Wolves.
The game matched up Oklahoma State commitments on both sides of the field as Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy watched in the stands with his youngest son, Gage, quarterbacking Stillwater. The Pioneers led at the half 11-6 and then going against a brisk south wind dominated keeping the ball in the third quarter and pulled away.
Stillwater used a “wildcat” attack with OSU commit and linebacker Gabe Brown coming in and running through the Wolves defense for an 18-6 lead.
Then Stillwater got the ball back on a fumbled kickoff by Santa Fe and they drove it down into the score zone where pint-sized running back Noah Richards plowed in for the touchdown to make it 24-6 Stillwater.
Finally, a big play on defense as the Pioneers were pretty salty on that side throughout the game. Brown ran into fellow Oklahoma State commits in Santa Fe wide receiver Talyn Shettron and tight end Tabry Shettron. On one play in the late third quarter, Shettron caught the ball heading toward the end zone and Stillwater popped the ball loose and Brown made the recovery.
Gage Gundy threw the touchdown pass to Ty Smithton to put Stillwater up 30-6. The Wolves worked to rally but ended up falling to 0-2 as Stillwater wins week one 30-20.
Pokes Report will have more on Gabe Brown on Sunday with a Premium video interview.
