Oklahoma State-Missouri State: Official Game Thread, Live Updates

STILLWATER – Game day is finally here! Oklahoma State is set to take on Missouri State for the season opener in Stillwater, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on ESPN+.

This is the start of the 122nd season in Oklahoma State history, and the Cowboys are currently 52-5-5 in home openers. This game marks the ninth all-time match up between the Pokes and the Bears, with the Pokes holding an 8-0 all-time record.

Pregame

It was reported by Robert Allen of the Cowboy Radio Network quarterback Spener Sanders is out of the season opener against Missouri State due to COVID-19 protocols.

Oklahoma State has won the coin toss and has deferred to the second half.

First Quarter

Missouri State with a delay of game on the opening play of the game.

Punt! OSU forces a punt on the opening drive, with a six yard return by Brennan Presley.

TOUCHDOWN! Shane Illingworth finds Tay Martin from five yards out for the touchdown! OSU leads MSU 6-0 after a missed extra point.

HUGE stop there on third down for Malcolm Rodriguez to force another MSU punt!

The Pokes can’t make anything happen on that drive, forcing the Pokes first punt of the game, a 46-yarder from Tom Hutton.

SACK! Kamryn Farrar with a five-yard sack to bring up a 3rd and 15!

BLOCK! Kody Walterscheid gets a hand on the 51-yard field goal attempt by Mo State, to give the Pokes the ball on their own 34-yard line.

OSU leads MSU 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter

TOUCHDOWN! Jaylen Warren forces his way into the end zone from one yard out for the score! (11:38) OSU leads 13-0.

FUMBLE! Devin Harper scoops the ball up off the turf following MSU QB dropping the ball. 1st and 10 OSU on the MSU 25-yard line.

TOUCHDOWN! LD Brown gets into the end zone from 11-yards out (10:57) OSU leads 20-0.

Punt! The OSU defense forces a third MSU punt of the day. OSU will start on their own 15 yard line to start the drive.

Impressive leaping catch there for freshman Jaden Bray! 36 yards and the first down!

Field Goal: Missouri State puts their first points on the board (1:51) OSU leads 20-3.

Interception: Illingworth throws his first interception of the season. 1st and 10 MSU from their own 8-yard line.

Halftime

OSU leads MSU 20-3 going into the half.

Shane Illingworth: 15-of-23 for 205 yards and a touchdown

Tay Martin: 4 receptions for 58 yards and a TD

Jaden Bray: 2 receptions for 52 yards.

Malcolm Rodriguez: 8 tackles, 4 solo stops

Devin Harper: 5 tackles, 2 solo stops

Third Quarter

OSU starts the third quarter with a punt

44-yard punt for Hutton.

Field goal: MSU puts another field goal on the board (1:15) OSU leads 20-9.

SACK! Mason Cobb records a sack for a six-yard loss to force an MSU punt!

Fumble: Dez Jackson fumbles the ball on the OSU side of the field. 1st and 10 MSU from the OSU 43.

Field goal: MSU knocks home a 48-yard field goal (7:27) 20-6.

Punt: Three busted plays result in -8 yards for the Pokes and a 44-yard punt for Tom Hutton. 1st and 10 MSU from their own 39-yard line.

FUMBLE RECOVERY! A muff punt results in a recover by Korie Black on the MSU 11-yard line!

Big play! Illingworth finds Brennan Presley for 33-yards and a first down!

Punt: OSU can’t make anything happen after the big play, which results in a punt. MSU will start on their own 25-yard line following a touchback and a five-yard penalty on the Pokes.

Punt: The OSU offense continues to stall after a big play. Illingworth finds Blaine Green for 14 yards, followed by a 41 yard punt by Tom Hutton.

Touchdown: MSU scores a touchdown from 8-yards out (3:06) OSU leads 23-16.

Targeting: Tre Sterling was called for targeting and has been ejected from the game.

SACK! Collin Oliver records his first career-tackle, a sack for a nine-yard loss!

SACK! Devin Harper records the second-straight sack on the play for a turnover on downs!

FINAL

OSU holds on to beat Missouri State 23-16.

Tulsa, Colorado State and UNLV (potential expansion partners) all take it on the chin from lesser teams...

Such an impressive opening drive for Illingworth. He goes 5-of-6 for 69 yards and a touchdown. 58 of those yards and the TD went to Martin.

Ask and you shall receive. Malcolm Rodriguez comes up with a huge stop on third and short to force another Mo State punt. 1st and 10 OSU from their own 8-yard line following a really good Mo State punt.

Malcolm Rodriguez already up to six tackles in the first quarter, four solo stops and one for a loss, and one pass break up. Such a difference maker in the middle for the Pokes.

I like the enthusiasm from Brennan on the punt return, but these guys are a little bit better than Bixby opponents. However, the stadium would've erupted had he broken something.

he started out really nervous and you could hear it in his voice, he got better as it went along.

The play-by-play host had to ask him a time or two what he meant (he was using coaching jargon)... like he said, that was a perfect pitch-and-toss by Shane, he saw the high-safety in man coverage (or something like that), and she immediately asked him, "what do you mean by high-safety".

he's gotten pretty good by the end of the 2nd qtr.

they just ran the Mr. Orange Power retirement bit... pretty cool. (I saw it previously).

I took my grandson (who we're raising) to the bowl game in San Diego about 10 years ago, he was 4 or 5. We were seated in the corner where the cheer leaders and Pistol Pete were located. At halftime, I took him down to the edge of the seating and he shouted at PP, who turned around and waved and shot his shotgun (scaring the kid to death). Mr OP was down there too, he picked up the spent shotgun shell and walked it over and handed it to Matthew.... it made his whole night.

Good Lord, this offense has really stalled out since the end of the first half. Really need something to spark this group because Missouri State won't stay away for long if they keep this up.
