OSU’s New Homecoming and Hoops Provided a New Vibe

STILLWATER – I liked this new format of homecoming and hoops more than I thought I would.

Homecoming and Hoops is a signature event for Cowboy and Cowgirl basketball, so was moved from GIA to the court outside of the Beta house I don’t think many people knew what to expect from it.

You know those videos you see online of high-profile NBA players playing pickup basketball on outdoor courts in a big city? With the big crowds gathered in an informal setting to just have fun and watch some basketball. That is what this felt like to me.

Granted, it was freezing cold with temps in the upper 40s and it was outside, so that was rough.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams did all of the same things they usually would do for the event, only this time the fans were closer to the action. Basically on top of each other is probably a better phrase.

Some OSU basketball royalty was in the house too. The women’s team was introduced by special guest Tiffany Bias. The men’s team was introduced by Desmond Mason.

Coach Mike Boynton received a huge ovation when introduced. This event was entirely organized by the basketball program to connect more with the students and it looks like it’s working.

The men held a three point contest in teams of two. Rondel Walker and Christian Sager walked away with the win.

Then to the fan favorite: the dunk contest.

At this point the music, microphones and even some lights went out. But nobody cared. The fans all gathered around one half of the court and MA Moncrieffe, Bryce Williams and Moussa Cisse went to work.

Moncrieffe barely missed what would have been the dunk of the night, so he missed the final round.

Williams came out on top in the final against Cisse.

After the event was over I talked to a few Cowboys about the event and they loved it (other than the cold).

Keylan Boone said they’re already planning next years’ event and says it’s going to be bigger and better.

The Cowboys tip-off their first exhibition game next Friday against UCO, and the Cowgirls first exhibition is next Thursday. Basketball season has arrived, folks.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
here's a great idea, let's create an event that most people can't attend, and make it horribly uncomfortable for those that do show up..

BRILLIANT!!

They didn't really have any other choice. They couldn't do it in GIA this year so they did the best they could to at least have an event. Considering how last-minute it was I thought it was pretty fun. But then again I was up at the front and not crammed in the back.
