The Basics
The fifth-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team (2-0 overall; 0-0 Big 12) opens its home schedule on Sunday with a dual against Drexel after two road wins against ranked opponents. The only home dual of the fall semester for the Cowboys, the match will start at 2 p.m. CT in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

The Series - Drexel
Oklahoma State and Drexel have only met twice before, with both matches going heavily in favor of Oklahoma State. OSU won the first meeting at the Virginia duals in 2008, with each Cowboy win coming with bonus points en route to a 35-12 victory. The last meeting took place in 2019 when the Cowboys defeated Drexel, 30-6, in the season opener at Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia. Saturday’s dual between the Dragons and Cowboys will be the first matchup between the schools in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

An Oklahoma State Win Would...
• Move the Cowboys to 3-0 overall

• Advance OSU John Smith’s record to 3-0 against Drexel

• Mark the 497th dual win in Gallagher-Iba Arena

• Extend Oklahoma State’s win streak in duals to 13, dating back to last season

Cowboys in the Polls
Oklahoma State’s roster features 10 wrestlers ranked in various polls this week, with five holding spots inside the top-10. Sophomore 197-pounder AJ Ferrari is the consensus No. 1 wrestler at his weight and is the highest ranked Cowboy, after winning his first individual title at the NCAA Championships in March. Following Ferrari, Daton Fix appears at No. 2 at 133 pounds as the reigning Big 12 champion and national finalist. Also making appearances in the top 10 of their respective weight classes are All-Americans Travis Wittlake and Dakota Geer. Wittlake is as high as No. 5 at 165 pounds in the Intermat rankings, while Geer is ranked sixth at 184 pounds by FloWrestling. 125-pounder Trevor Mastrogiovanni cracked the top-10 of the FloWrestling poll for the first time in his career following an upset over No. 5 Patrick McKee of Minnesota last Saturday. Wyatt Sheets (157) and Dustin Plott hold the No. 16 spot in each of their respective weight classes, according to Intermat. Sheets is 1-1 on the season, while Plott is 2-0 with both wins coming against ranked opponents. At 141 pounds, true freshman Carter Young appeared in the polls for the first time after his season debut against Minnesota. Kaden Gfeller (149) is the No. 21 ranked wrestler at 149 pounds by FloWrestling after a ranked win against Minnesota’s Michael Blockhus, while Luke Surber lands at No. 31 in Intermat’s heavyweight poll.

Match to Watch
One of two ranked matchups between OSU and Drexel will take place at 174 pounds where No. 12 Mickey O’Malley of Drexel will take on No. 16 Dustin Plott. Both wrestlers were NCAA Championship qualifiers in 2021 but dropped out of the tournament in the consolations. As a sophomore, O’Malley put together an 11-5 record, while Plott went 15-6 in his true freshman season. Early in the 2021-22 season, O’Malley has already racked up eight wins for the Dragons, while Plott is 2-0 with both wins coming against ranked opponents in No. 31 Tyler Eischens of Stanford and No. 23 Jared Krattiger of Minnesota.

Trevor Mastrogiovanni

Trevor Mastrogiovanni was selected as the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week by league coaches after upsetting No. 5 Patrick McKee in Minneapolis on Saturday. The sophomore 125-pounder won a 10-6 decision over McKee, who placed third at the NCAA Championships in March. Mastrogiovanni held a 4-3 lead after the first period and used an escape and a pair of takedowns to extend his lead to 9-4 in the second, before sealing the upset in the final period. This is the first time Mastrogiovanni has won the award in his career and marks the first time a Cowboy has been named conference wrestler of the week since Wyatt Sheets on February 25, 2020.
