Cowboys Star Pass Rusher Brock Martin Announces Return for Next Year; Others Considering

During senior day activities this past Saturday, Larry Reece introduced senior defensive end Brock Martin as a “true cowboy who has given everything to cowboy football”. Well, now it is confirmed that he will indeed be giving one more year to the program, Martin announced himself via Twitter, saying: “Hey BPS, I’ll be seeing you again next year”.

Martin has played in 39 games as a Cowboy, racking up 96 total tackles, 23 tackled for loss and 8.5 sacks. He has also recovered five fumble recoveries in his career.

While Martin has been a steady contributor throughout his career, this 2021 season has truly been a breakout year, setting career highs in all three statistics mentioned above. Martin is tied for second in team sacks this season with six.

Although Martin has played in all four seasons, he is granted an extra year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. No played in college football lost eligibility during the 2020 season.

There are also reports Martin will not be the only Cowboy to utilize the extra year of eligibility. Defensive backs Tre Sterling, Tanner McCalister, and Jarrick Bernard-Converse are all said to be considering a return to Oklahoma State in 2022.

Wide receiver Braydon Johnson, who missed this season due to medical reasons is also considering a return at this time.

There will most likely be more names added to this list as post season play goes on and the 2021 season comes to an end.

Fantastic news! Gundy said "most" of those he'd spoken to are considering or already planning on it, so definitely expect more to announce their intention to stay soon.

that is certainly great news....

QUESTION: Teams were given a "pass" this season by the NCAA on the 85 scholarship limit, can these folks return without impacting our recruiting class?

can we still take 25, or do we not have that many positions open, or does the 85 man limit not apply so long as COVID affected players choose to continue exercising their "free year"?
