Fiesta Bowl Has Head Coach Working as DC and DC Becoming Head Coach

STILLWATER – What an interesting match-up coming up in Glendale, Ariz. on January 1. I know, the first ever meeting between Oklahoma State and perhaps, the most historic program in college football in Notre Dame. Here’s another interesting aspect to the game. Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy is more than proven as a head coach, a winner, a bowl game winner, an offensive jedi mind and a coach that hires good coordinators. He just lost his best ever on the defensive side as Jim Knowles became the highest paid coordinator in Ohio State history. In this game Gundy is working to be on top of the Cowboys highly successful defense in Knowles absence. This is something a little new to Gundy. Meanwhile in South Bend, the Irish defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman changed titles a couple of weeks ago. Freeman, an excellent defensive coach, is now head coach at Notre Dame.

“He just remains the same person every day,” Notre Dame defensive end and captain Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa said. “He comes to work. We have a philosophy that we instilled across the team: challenge everything, unit strength and competitive advantage. That’s his approach and that’s his demeanor in every practice.

“He comes ready to work. He wants everybody to get better and take that next step in our game, added Tagovailoa-Amosa. “That’s his mindset.”

One thing Freeman did with his start of bowl practices was make everything a competition. The offense and the defense come out and immediately drill against each other. Score is kept. Bragging rights are in play.

“Offense is currently 0-2,” the Tagovailoa-Amosa said on Dec. 12 following the team’s second bowl practice on campus.

“It's nothing more than continuing to develop that competitive spirit — that mindset that everything in our power is to win,” Freeman said. “If I got a chance to make a play, I got to make the play. "That's what I tried to reiterate to the team (in practice). It's about when your opportunity presents itself, you got to make the play. That's all I'm trying to create during those periods."

Gundy could surely give Freeman some pointers on establishing that competitive spirit and learning how to power through a season. It’s also important to learn how to seize opportunity and Gundy has been excellent with that.

Now, Freeman could probably help Gundy with some pointers on defense. His defense at Notre Dame was excellent this season, not far behind Oklahoma State in the statistical categories. He also has built some really good defenses other places, most recently Cincinnati last season before coming to Notre Dame.

Gundy has adjusted his practice routine coming down from the perch above watching all and spending time with the defense.

"It's a change having him out there for us, especially on our side of the ball, said defensive end Tyler Lacy. “But I mean everyone is out there with the same common goal, to win and get better. So, I figure he's not giving us any harm by being over there and we're just taking it day-by-day. We're listening to what he has to say and going out there and executing."

Gundy seems excited to take on his new defensive responsibilities. It keeps him in touch with that other side of the ball from where he was as a quarterback and assistant coach and coordinator.

"I know what Jim (Knowles) does at practice. The integral parts of what he does in the meeting rooms all day, Gundy explained. “I'm not in there with them all day. So, that's when I went in to gather that information. Then I took his responsibilities and said, 'Okay, (Tim) Duffie, you got this, Joe Bob (Clements), you got this, Hammer (Dan Hammerschmidt), you got this, to cover what Jim did in practice, the scripting the plays, the stuff we do, all that is done in meeting rooms anyway, you guys know that. It's no different when (Mike) Yurcich) and (Todd) Monken and all those guys left whenever I called it, everything was done in the meeting room. I just showed up and called it on game day. So that's where we're at right now."

What I want to know is where both coaches will be at with their change on January 1. Where they are could decide where their team is on the scoreboard at the end of the game.

I like Gundy's approach given the situation. I expect the defense will play lights out.

I like the approach as well. It's the same approach as I have if I lose a general superintendent for whatever reason - the project has to go on, so I fill in for the project supt. I'm not the end-all-be-all field expert, but I have craft superintendents that are for their areas of expertise so I will divide parts of the execution plan to each of them to develop, then lean on them to step up a bit to make the plan / work the plan. And we will deliver because we were a cohesive team before, with a tight common goal.

I can't fault the approach of Gundy. Would we prefer that Knowles is still in place to play his normal part?- Absolutely! But he's not and the game goes on. Gundy fills part of the role, and divides the development of the plan to the other defensive coaches. They were a cohesive team before with a tight common goal - and I believe they will deliver with excellence.

the biggest impact that I noticed by Knowles was the ability to make adjustments at the half..

it seems to follow that since our offense is notoriously horrid at making half time adjustments with Gundy's input, then shouldn't we expect the same results ..... you get the point.

putting a plumber in to do the job of a welder doesn't seem productive IMHO.

it seems to imply that we have defensive coaches that are so inept that they would have no idea how to watch ND film and game plan without Gundy's expert guidance, and that our super senior lead defense suddenly forgot what to do and need extra help for this last challenge.

preposterous.

somebody tell me this is a joke.... it is, right?

I agree that Knowles was masterful at halftime adjustments. The rest....I don't know about all that. I think the HC is quite adept at setting things up to get a plan made, making assignments, and holding the assistants accountable for the results. In addition, we have to find out sometime if Clements and/or Duffie has the chops to make those adjustments at halftime. I think it is clear that Gundy's role isn't much different than it ever was - he's coaching the coaches. That's his job. Not the in-the-trenches technique and call. For now, he's spending more time of the D side than he normally does. We have very capable D assistants - hell, we even have a number of players on the field for the defense that are, in effect, coaches-on-the-field. I think we'll be fine.

We also don't know how much or little input the defensive assistants had with Knowles in identifying and implementing changes at halftime. My best guess is that over time the assistants had more and more input after watching and participating first hand the process and results. Maybe the evolution of better and better halftime adjustments was as much the assistants as it was Knowles. Nonetheless, let's not dismiss the reason halftime adjustments can be made with success - the ability of our defensive personnel to effectively play multiple schemes, alignments, coverages, pressure and personnel packages. This defense, unlike many programs, is not confined to just a couple of schemes and packages that can be exploited by most offenses given time and study. The "multiple" aspect of our defense gives Gundy and the other assistants a real good chance at "not skipping a beat".

Interesting to see Mike involved with the defense to this extent, I know Notre Dame didn't have as tough a schedule as we did or defeat the same number of top 25 teams this season.

Plain and simple we are without a defensive coordinator. He's gone! Gundy is doing what a head coach does, inspiring his other coaches to take up the responsibilities left by Knowles. Make it a defensive coordinator job interview for one of the coaches if you will. No, this is not a joke as someone put it but serious business.
Win the game, show that we are still a defensive power.

hmmm.... well.... okay....

make it a job interview by doing the job yourself?

oh my, what in the world is ND going to do, since their DC is being the HC? Is that a suggesting that having a HC is more important at ND than having a DC?

didn't many Poke fans plead for years that Gundy stay out of the offense, and now it's a godsend that he mingle in the defense? It just seemed like an obvious fan concern based on our past

you know what I'm saying.

Personally I would have felt better if Gundy had simply said, don't worry fans, I'll make sure that the coaches and players on defense are prepared. The whole thing should be well-oiled at this point in the season, and as Gundly likes to remind us, the daily routines are set and we try not to vary much from them.

Someone might want to reread the article. Reading comprehension is a powerful thing. You know the parts about assignments to the coaches…………

what's with the personal attack?

There were 3 paragraphs about what Gundy is doing and you pick out one sentence to focus on.

All I said was that those coaches should already know what to do (without his input), and it is not a "job interview" if you don't actually give that "job" to somebody.

it just seems odd to me, and contrary to what he normally has to say...

why do you know think it's a personal attack if someone questions you? It was hard to take your remarks serious when you open with…"this is a joke right"
My take is that coach Gundy is just doing his job as the head coach after losing a defensive coordinator. He has stated that he does not intend to replace him until after the bowl game. I hope he is doing everything he knows possible to win the game and finish off a very successful season. So if you want to speak positively about football and completing the season let's continue our discussion.

How would Gundy know ANYTHING about defense?

Oh wait, he's been reading and defeating defenses almost his entire life.

Never mind.

oh no you don't get off without an apology.

I know think that it was a personal attack because you did not "question me", you actually questioned my personal abilities of reading and comprehension.

If you have a question for me then ask it, if you simply want to cast dispersion on my abilities, capabilities and sensibilities.... then bug off, and stop trying to ack like Mr. Innocent.

it was simply a down right nasty thing to say.
