Cowboys Roll to Pair of Wins at Air Force and Wyoming
LARAMIE, Wyo. – The No. 4 Oklahoma State wrestling team collected two Big 12 dual wins on the road on Friday. The Cowboys started the day in Colorado Springs with a 45-0 shutout of Air Force before they traveled north and defeated Wyoming, 30-3.
Beginning with the Falcons, OSU notched a bonus-point win in nine of the 10 weight classes. The Cowboys combined for five major decisions, two technical falls and two pins.
At 133 pounds, Daton Fix won via fall for the third match in a row, pinning Sidney Flores in 3:58. Sophomore heavyweight Luke Surber ended the dual with a fall of his own as he locked up a cradle on Cole Forrester in 3:42.
Beginning at 149 pounds, the Cowboys collected major decisions in four straight matches from Kaden Gfeller, Wyatt Sheets, Travis Wittlake and Dustin Plott. Trevor Mastrogiovanni also started off the dual with a 12-2 major decision over Quinn Melofchik at 125 pounds.
Dakota Geer and AJ Ferrari each picked up technical falls against the Falcons. Geer (184) used a turn as the last seconds ticked off the clock to secure a 21-5 tech fall over Jake Thompson, which was his third technical fall of the season. Ferrari's match against Kayne Hutchinson ended at 5:54 with a score of 19-4. The win marked Ferrari's fourth bonus-point win on the season, which is tied with Fix for the team lead, and his second technical fall of the season.
Carter Young defeated Cody Phippen, 3-1, before claiming a 15-6 major decision to start the dual against Chase Zollman of Wyoming.
Oklahoma State took nine matches against the Cowboys of Wyoming. Three Cowboys won ranked matchups against their Wyoming foes.
Following Young, Kaden Gfeller battled back from an early deficit to earn a 10-5 decision over Jaron Jensen. Wyatt Sheets and Jacob Wright put together a wild match at 157 pounds as the two finished regulation at 1-1 before ana action-packed sudden victory period that resulted in no points. In the first tiebreaker, Sheets started on bottom and escaped in five seconds before riding Wright in his turn on bottom to claim a 2-1 decision.
At 165 pounds, Travis Wittlake collected his second major decision of the day in a 10-2 victory over Cooper Voorhees. Dustin Plott improved to 6-0 on the season with four wins over ranked opponents after taking down No. 12 Hayden Hastings, 7-2. In the marquee matchup of the night, AJ Ferrari defended his top ranking defeating No. 5 Stephen Buchanan, 4-2 in a competitive match.
OSU finished strong with Luke Surber winning a 12-5 decision over Terren Swartz and Trevor Mastrogiovanni getting a takedown in the third sudden victory match of the night that gave him a 7-5 victory over Jake Svihel. No. 2 Daton Fix closed out the night with a 10-1 major decision over Job Greenwood.
The Pokes will have two days off, while traveling to Orem, Utah for a dual against Utah Valley that will conclude the fall slate for OSU on Monday, December 20 at 8 p.m. CT.
