Cowboys Wide Receiver Matt Polk Enters Transfer Portal

The second Oklahoma State transfer portal entry of the day has hit as it has been reported that wide receiver Matt Polk has entered the portal.

Matt Polk was signed in the class of 2020 but has never seen playing time in his two years in Stillwater. He simply just did not crack any playing time in 2020 but missed the 2021 season due to a serious knee injury suffered before the season began.

Monroe Mills, who was also in the 2020 class, was the first portal entry of the day.

In that article earlier I said that some fans might not see players entering the portal but some of these portal entries are somewhat needed. Because of the super seniors accounting for scholarships, spots are being needed to open up to allow newcomers onto the roster such as the 2022 signees and possible incoming transfers.

This will most likely not be the last of the Cowboys entering the portal, in fact there may be several more. In most of these cases, it is just a situation of players not having a clear path or future to playing time.

Pokes Report will continue to monitor developments in the transfer portal, both with players leaving but also coming.

The Cowboys staff has done a good job of using the portal to fill immediate needs and turning them into major contributors.

You talk like these are planned? Or like the coaches brought in guys knowing we didn't have an open spot for them? Article doesn't make much sense or I am reading it wrong

I think that you are reading it wrong.

the kids leave on their own because they can see that they sinking further on the depth chart, it has nothing to do with the coaches. In the WR case, we both know how many really good young receivers we have on the roster, with several more coming in this class. The timing of his injury probably hurt him the most, because of all years, this year (especially early) is the time he could have got some PT.... we had walk ons in the games.

No I don't mean the coaches are walking around asking guys to transfer. The coaches and staff expect guys to enter the portal. Im saying this process is natural and the roster attrition is not due to players just not liking it at OSU. Some guys don't have a clear shot to playing time and only have a small amount of time to maximize their careers. Transfer portal entries is inevitable`at this point in college football.

Well you said roster spots are needed. So I am confused I guess. What if these kids didn't transfer would we have to turn recruits away after signing them because we didn't have a spot for them after all?

I had a discussion with Gary Ward years ago. He told me that he spoke with players all the time who did not think they were getting enough playing time, for one reason or the other, and he would recommend they transfer to another program, and would make phone calls on their behalf. I am sure this happens all the time behind the scenes, especially now in football. No big deal.

I think what he is suggesting is that we have given all of our available scholarships, but the coaches are still recruiting and watching to portal, because the anticipation is that more will be leaving (and they have).

We don't have to have many of the spots available until Fall 2022, and lots can change during the Spring and Summer.
