Frisco Lone Star is one of the most consistent programs in the nation when it comes to making their way deep into the Texas 5A playoffs, one of the roughest roads in the high schools ranks in the nation.

Every year, there is one player who is considered to be the star of the team, one who is often headed off to Power 5.

For a couple seasons in ‘15 and ‘16, it was now Utah State QB Jason Shelley, who led them to the state title game. Then it was former University of Illinois QB MJ Rivers. And then for two seasons it was now First Team All Big 12 wide receiver Marvin Mims, who is just a true freshman. This year, it is Jaden Nixon.

Last season for the Rangers, Mims became the all time leading receiver in Texas High School Football history. Even though Mims was putting up video game numbers every game, it was not he who was closing out games and really making defenses fall apart.

It was Jaden Nixon. And he is doing it once again.

I spent about an hour with Jaden on signing day as he went through his ceremony and officially became a Cowboy. Two days later, he and the Rangers took on Magnolia in the second round of playoffs.

In the game against Magnolia, Jaden put the team on his back, taking 27 total touches for 221 yards and 4 total touchdowns, 3 of which came on the ground. 143 of the 221 yards were rushing.

The first of his touchdowns came on the first play from scrimmage as he took off for a 67 yarder on the ground. The next was a 1 yard rush out of the wildcat formation. His third one, he switched it up and had a receiving touchdown from 40 yards out. His final touchdown of the game was another short yardage situation in the wildcat formation he punched in from 3 yards.

He is now at 1,015 total yards on the season with 19 touchdowns.

Jaden and the Rangers will now face the Highland Park Scots in round 3, which is being played at Globe Life Field on Thursday at 3:15p.m.

Although the Scots are 10-0 this season, I guarantee you every single one of their returning starters from last season does not have much confidence in this game. They are currently having nightmares about Jaden Nixon.

Going into last season, the Scots had won 3 straight state titles and were working on a fourth, boasting an 11-1 record heading into the game. Their only prior loss? To Jaden Nixon, Marvin Mims and the Rangers in week three of the season.

They faced them again late in the playoffs and it was a classic which went into overtime. The final play of the game saw Jaden Nixon take a handoff from his the Highland Park 18 yard line and streak straight to the endzone as he galloped over the goal line. He not only ended the Scots season but their run of state titles.

He will now face them again and he is playing his best football of the season.

I will be on site in Arlington to watch him in this game! I am expecting a show from Nixon and when I told him I was coming on Sunday night at 10:45, he replied with “Bet! It only means I gotta turn up even more now!”

He knows what Highland Park thinks of him and he knows how much this game means. Expect a star performance from the Cowboy!
