Tyrese Williams Confirms He's in the Portal and Leaving

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State is losing another offensive lineman and that is disappointing as red-shirt senior guard Tyrese Williams confirmed to Pokes Report that he has gone in the transfer portal and his intent is to play next season somewhere else. Williams going into the portal was first reported by Max Olson of The Athletic.

“Yes sir, I’ve gone in the transfer portal and I’m going to be leaving,” Williams said. “I will be here in school this semester and then graduate in May and I will be looking to see where I will end up.”

Williams was the back-up at left guard behind Josh Sills all season and with Sills being banged up, Williams started two games and played in two others (Kansas and Fiesta Bowl vs. Notre Dame). Asked about his opportunity to start with Sills being gone, he had this answer.

Williams (60) on the offensive line in the spring game.

“That looks cloudy, so I thought I would go on and look for somewhere I know I could play,” Williams said.

The 6-2, 300-pound product of Cy-Ridge High School in the Houston-area came in as a strong prospect to play center and backed up there, but then moved to guard most of the past two seasons. He made news during the COVID semester by working out at home with a harness on and pulling a dually pick-up around his neighborhood in Cypress.

Williams has always been one of those players with a good attitude and was all about the team. He told me it is not the program or the coaches.

“Coach Dickey is a good offensive line coach and just what we needed here,” Williams said.

His decision to leave is based on being somewhere he has a greater opportunity to be in the line-up as a starter.

Williams will have two seasons left to play. His red-shirt senior season and, if he chooses, a COVID super senior season.

Williams’ announcement leaves Oklahoma State with 12 returning scholarship offensive linemen. They have a transfer portal visitor wrapping up a visit today (Jan. 14) in Michael Shanahan of Tennessee-Martin. They are also waiting on a decision from Western Kentucky transfer Mason Brooks, who visited Oklahoma State last week.

Junior college transfer and two-time All-American Tyrone Webber is on campus now and there are are two high school offensive linemen in the recruiting class.

You can expect that the Cowboys will keep pursuing more options.

I guess this is part of the new world of college football that we just have to accept and live with. It really stinks for the coaches and fans. Guns for hire coming to town and then leaving. George Steinbrenner loved it.

NIL money+ starts+ Portal = player volatility

I guess so.... but it's still surprising to me.

Didn't he play center this year when both of the guys ahead of him went down? I thought for sure he would be one of the first off the bench, if not a starter.

Maybe he wants to start, prove his worth and skip his Covid eligibility year if he can, since he will already have his degree from OSU.

I probably have the wrong attitude but if coaches were constantly bringing in portal guys to replace me it would make me less loyal.
I understand competition. Don't know if this has anything to do with tyrese

so..... you're saying that since we brought in a portal RB (the past couple of years), then all of our RBs should always be entering the portal?

Williams graduated (May), and wants to play now, even if it's at a lesser program. (apparently)

Although it was a first year player that is how we got Dom Richardson. Gary Patterson made his choice on bringing in another RB. I don't know if Patterson attitude on who can be on scholarship played a role in his current employment situation but I think chemistry is very important. The obvious position this plays a role is QB.
Just a thought as I see players come and go.

Like it has been said, this is the future of college football. Get used to it or not. This is how it's going to be.
Now, I'm wondering that Gundy has built the Cowboy Culture up for years being loyal to players and coaches, but that has changed.
Will Gundy's Cowboy Culture survive this type of new dictum?
I know there are rules, but do we really want to follow them now?

can you rephrase that statement and use more terms than "it" and "this" ... I'm not sure how to interpret what you said.

it sounds like you're saying that the future is not compatible with the past, and neither is our "Culture", which is itself not defined very well, or that our culture is not compatible with this new dictum, whatever it is that you think that may be.

certainly the above style of writhing was not taught in journalism school.

It's tough to know how much of this about PT and how much about $$$$$$. Because no one is going to give out the financial details.

What we do know is that some schools have set about lining up NIL for players. OSU took the high road to educate and help the kids find good opportunities.

Sounds like we need an unofficial Posse Club that is all about NIL and making sure our kids get paid enough to stay. We can't eliminate PT as a transfer desire, but we could at least minimize NIL as the cause.

I think our initial take was a good one based on how NIL was supposed to work. Now that we see that its not going to work that way, we need to change plans.
