Gundy Closing In on Defensive Coordinator, But No Decision Yet

STILLWATER – During the last 24 hours there have been a lot of reports starting with a Twitter message on Wednesday night from Bruce Feldman of The Athletic that current Auburn defensive coordinator Derek Mason had become a factor in the Oklahoma State defensive coordinator search.

So Mason is the only one to actually interview in Stillwater. Would think he got the run down and the tour. Seems to say a lot to me. Maybe it's wishful thinking but bringing him to the house is definitely more personal than a convention meeting room

I read that he is making 1.5 million annually at Auburn. Hopefully we can match that salary. He coaches CB and Safety so would we need to hire a LB coach or would he bring some of the coaches from Auburn?

With one more hire (the DC), OSU would be at the limit of 10 assistant coaches, so they couldn't hire another one. This also means that no Auburn guys could come other than maybe graduate assistant type guys.

So from what I have heard, Mason is currently making 1.5M but we only offered Knowles 1.3M (who produced a better defense.)...do you think that he is going to take a paycut to come here....and why didn't we offer Knowles more if we end up matching Masons 1.5M....

We weren't paying him 2 million so it's a mute point. He did a great job building a defense that was amazing this year. Experience and depth provided the perfect ingredients for excellence. With the loss of both, maintaining or exceeding those results will be hard. His opportunity to capitalize and get paid would never be better. Jim acted on a once in a lifetime opportunity and perfect timing. The coaches Gundy is interviewing are high quality, experienced coaches needed to rebuild this defense. The talent is there. The experience and depth are not. Coach Gundy is on the right track again

A major league baseball player just got a $270 million contract at $27 mill per year, so $1.5 mill sounds like peanuts. That shows just how insane things have become when paying athletes and coaches. Ridiculous and one reason people pay $200 to park at a NFL game.
I say this to say no way would I pay Mason his current $1.5 million. Find a DC that wants to coach to coach rather than coach to be rich.

Oh the price of success. After the very successful season we had why do I have such a nervous stomach?
I have a ton of faith in our program and HC but all this speculation drives me crazy!!!

That phrase is based on opinion...

If someone says "Im not buying it", in no way does that mean "this has no chance of happening."

We understand that it *could* happen, but we think it will happen differently or at least at a different time.

So Robert or Marshall - has Joe Bob Clements confirmed he's a Cowboy next year? Like come out and said it? I really hope he stays and would have been pumped if got the DC nod. I'm concerned. We've got to stop the bleeding and stabilize the ship. Any thoughts? Thanks.

We know that he wanted out at Auburn and that a new DC was coming in at Auburn.

Im sure the Auburn site is tuned in to what is going on at Auburn in terms of coaches but we have the best sources at Oklahoma State and we feel confident that this is not happening in the way it is being reported. Could he becoming DC? Sure, but we don't think its imminent or as far into the process as some are reporting.

We know that Gundy met with the defensive staff to inform them he was going outside the program to hire the DC. Robert wrote a few days ago that "Clements confirmed those meetings and told me he has moved on and is good with what will happen."

So he is ready to work and is good with the future.

Well that sort of changes the salary question. If he's leaving then matching his salary isn't an issue IF we're trying to hire him.

This happened to Fedora last year at BU per RA. Some programs will fire coaches when discovered they are interviewing. It sound like four coaches were interviewed for DC position but no one offered yet and process is still evolving.

Robert stated on his show that it was his OPINION and everyone seems to have their opinion on this hire, but the only one that counts is the head man who has to make the decision, You, Zach and Robert are correct when you point out that Auburn plays in a ROUGH NEIGHBORHOOD when you look at their competition there are a couple of Big XII schools that will find out just how rough that neighborhood is in a few years. Keep up the good work Marshall everyone appreciates your efforts!

Harsin already promoted Schmedding to DC and they both have Boise State ties. Harsin will be fired next year so Mason is smart to leave now. Auburn made a mistake in hiring Harsin.

Yeah the Auburn boards are melting down over the move. It's not clear if this was in the works and that was why Mason was looking or if it was as Marshall thought him getting replaced for listening to options. There was a tweet from someone spotting Mason and Gundy at the Stillwater airport that said it was 31 minutes ago. That was a couple of hours back. Now timestamps can be altered and someone can wait a week before posting a pic so who knows, but there's a lot of smoke out there and at least a fire at Auburn about this one.

Gundy should promote from within the program. We had our best defense ever and we don't reward any of our loyal defensive coaches. Knowles didn't do this by
Himself.If our assistant coaches are successful, reward them. Don't piss on them!
