STILLWATER – Oklahoma State is no longer without a defensive coordinator as Derek Mason has been announced to fill the position. Mason was most recently the DC at Auburn, where he stepped down from the position on Jan. 22.

Mason played his college ball as a cornerback at Northern Arizona University, where he was a four-year letterman and a two-year starter. He began his coaching career at Mesa Community College as a wide receivers coach back in 1994 and has had multiple stops, including the NFL, along his way to Stillwater.

The spot Cowboy fans will be most familiar with will be as the Assistant Head Coach and Co-Defensive Coordinator during the 2011 season at Stanford, the same year the No. 3 Cowboys beat No. 4 Stanford 41-38 in overtime with a 22-yard field goal by Quinn Sharp.

Here's all the stops Mason has made during his coaching career.

  • 1994: Mesa CC (WR)
  • 1995–1996: Weber State (WR)
  • 1997–1998: Idaho State (RB)
  • 1999–2001: Bucknell (DB)
  • 2002: Utah (WR/ST)
  • 2003: St. Mary's (AHC/Co-DC)
  • 2004: New Mexico State (WR)
  • 2005–2006: Ohio (WR)
  • 2007–2009: Minnesota Vikings (Asst. DB)
  • 2010: Stanford (DB)
  • 2011: Stanford (AHC/Co-DC/DB)
  • 2012–2013: Stanford (AHC/DC)
  • 2014–2020: Vanderbilt
  • 2021: Auburn (DC)

He was at Vanderbilt for seven seasons and Stanford for four seasons before that. If he stays three or four years, that's fine with me. Coordinators don't stay forever.

He was HC at vandy, what did you want him to do, quit for a HC job someplace else?

at Stanford, he got promoted... there is no promotion waiting for him here

Cal, there's a head coaching job that will open up at some point, not that I'm one of those who is ever anxious for the day HCMG decides he's had enough of coaching at OSU. But somebody internal will hopefully have earned consideration by the time. As to those who worry about this coach moving, I spent most of my life in HR. Normally there are two main reasons for people changing jobs a lot, either they 1) can't/won't perform or get along with folks at the prior job or 2) they're well qualified and skilled and thus worth more money to another employer. Hopefully we'll find that it's the latter with this coach, as being worth more than he's being paid is better than wishing he'd leave because he's a failure or can't get along with anyone!

LOL... good one.

this is sports... there are another reasons, the HC got fired and all the staff left.....it's a stepping stone until something better comes along..... the wife ain't happy with no malls nearby... the Boss is a jerk and you leave for tOSU as quickly as you can (like our OC and DC did)..... somebody else offers you a boat load of money to switch firms... you get divorced and the Ex wants to stay local, so you move to Clemson.... college athletics is not corporate HR...I think we have experienced all of those, and then some

but I do get your point. perhaps we'll revisit this in a few years and see if we might have been better off hiring from within
