STILLWATER – Earlier in the week on signing day I receiver a message on my radio show from a regular. We call this text system TPT (Triple Play Texters) because the show is on Triple Play Sports Radio (1020 AM, 1580 AM, 105.1 FM, 93.3 FM, and 93.1 FM). The texter basically asked why Oklahoma State didn’t offer a scholarship to Marlow, Okla. All-State kicker Jace Gilbert. Gilbert signed on Wednesday with Iowa State.

Let's call it what it really is for last season. Lighting in a bottle! Unless they can put 2 years together I'm not holding my breath. The special teams have been dreadful for 5+yrs.

Also, I can tell you that Jace really wanted to come to OSU. Can't turn down a scholarship though.

No, you can't and Jace may end up being an All-American kicker. However, hard to not reward a kicker that goes 17-of-21 in Division I play with that pressure on. Also, you should have Alex Hale back at full strength by next season. You can't give a high school kicker a scholarship over a player like Brown in that situation. Also, the special teams have not been a disaster. Punt unit has been good for some time. Kickoffs have been okay on coverage but kicker inconsistent until this season. Returns have been non existent for some time but they are back and well executed.
I like Jace, liked him all along.

yep... special teams have been much better than dreadful, ST was not a sore spot on the team.

that said, they have not been a weapon of late either, but this year could change some of that, with good kickers, and improving and deeper return specialists. We shall see if there is enough improvement to be a weapon (in gaining positive filed position and points), but they certainly will be far from dreadful.

Do teams ever put a 2nd kicker on scholarship if you have a promising freshman and a RS senior?

Teams that scholarship kickers initially might bring in a second kicker in the last year of eligibility for the established kicker on the roster. Brown has two more seasons. Also, Oklahoma State has done that in the past and had it not work out. There best kickers lately have often come through walk-ons such as Dan Bailey and Matt Ammendola.Tanner Brown currently and before his knee injury Alex Hale.
