What Cowboy Basketball Asked Santa for Christmas

I’d like to start this article by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and happy holidays. Everyone here at Pokes Report hopes this time of year brings you hope, joy and peace.

It’s been a bit of a rough start to the conference schedule for Mike Boynton and Co. They’ve started out 0-2, but those two loses have been by a combined four-points. That’s not too shabby, especially considering one of those loses came to the No. 11 team in the country on the road.

However, while the Cowboys were in both ball games with a chance to win each one at the end, they’ve came up short due to consistency issues. Consistency from the free throw line, consistency from beyond the 3-point line, consistency in not turning the ball over or fouling in key moments in the second half.

Pokes Report has an in at the North Pole and here’s what Cowboy basketball has asked for in the letter they wrote to Santa Claus.

The first thing they asked the big man for is, you guessed it, consistency. In the losses to TCU and Texas, the Cowboys went a combined 8-of-34 from 3-point range and just 30-of-47 from the free throw line. Even if the 3-point shooting didn’t improve, if they made just a few more free throws, they’re sitting atop the league at 2-0 and are still undefeated on the season.

The next thing they asked Santa for is something they’re enjoying right now and that’s time off. The Pokes, while they haven’t played as many games to start this season as in previous season, it was still time for a little break for this young team. A chance to catch their breath and be with loved ones is just what a young team needs. Now, that can’t last too long as they need to get back in the gym and work on their 3-ball and free throw shooting, but that will come shortly after Christmas.

The next thing they asked for is the injury and COVID bug to stay away. While this team has depth in terms of numbers, they can’t afford to lose a guy to injury or illness, especially when it comes to starters. Just take a look back to last season when Isaac Likekele got sick. That team was chocked full of veteran guys and they took a deep dive down the loss column and nearly never recovered.

This team needs guys like Ice, Cunningham, Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe and others to keep this ship from sinking. They’re right on the verge of doing something special, let’s hope they can keep that going.

The last thing they asked Santa for, other than a remote-control dinosaur and an inflatable bouncy castle for the locker room, was for the NCAA to be fair and make the right decision. An athletic department contingent will head up, or possibly join a Zoom call, with the NCAA in Indianapolis in Feb. to discuss the ruling. We’re not sure when the decision will be handed down, but no one on this team had anything to do with Lamont Evans’ infractions and the team certainly didn’t gain anything, on or off the court from the money taken.

This season as the makings of being special, certainly more special than we’ve seen in the last decade or so, the Pokes just needs a few bounces to go their way. Let’s hope the big man brings Boynton and Co. exactly what they asked for this season.

Ball security......reduce turnovers.....reduce 3 pt shots.....dribble penetrate.....hit free throws....rebound.....play hard nosed defense that turns into offense.....

I agree, less turnovers, better free through percentage and tough perimeter defense to cut down on made threes by the opponent.
