After Sunday's Final Day, Rodriguez Still Top Combine Performer of the Pokes
STILLWATER – The NFL Combine wrapped up on Sunday with the defensive backs and specialists. Oklahoma State’s Kolby Harvell-Peel was DB52 sandwiched in the second group of defensive backs top prospect in Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamailton and Michigan and Tulsa Booker T. Washington product Dax Hill. Harvell-Peel made a strong statement early before the 40 and the field testing with 21 reps in the bench press putting him third among all defensive backs, but then Harvell-Peel did little the rest of the day. Both the other Cowboys in Indianapolis did more and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez likely made himself some money with the excellent 40-time he was shooting for.
Harvell-Peel measured at 6-0, 213-pounds with a 31 1/8-inches on the arm measurement and a big hand at 9 3/4-inches. The measurements and the bench press are the only official numbers for Harvell-Peel at the combine. He did not run the 40-yard-sprint. With Hamilton running 4.59-seconds the Cowboys All-Big 12 performer could have looked good.
Harvell-Peel closed out the NFL Combine for Cowboys participants with the drop and change of direction drill. He did that first safety drill and did fine, but then the next time we saw him he had his warm-up hoodie on and had replace his cleats with slides and was done for the day. The assumption is he will do everything except the bench press at Oklahoma State’s Pro Day on Thursday, March 24.
Oklahoma State Cowboys All-American and All-Big 12 linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez has spent lots of time in Scottsdale, Ariz., all his time since the bowl game except for a week in California preparing for and playing in the NFLPA All-Star Game.
He put in the work and the former high school multiple state championship winning quarterback, state champion wrestler, and baseball shortstop promised he would emulate a strong track presence at the NFL Combine. He did exactly that with his opportunity on Saturday.
Rodriguez, who measured 5-11, 232-pounds, did just that and blazed his first 40-yard spring in 4.57 seconds. His second run was consistent as it was unofficially clocked in 4.58. Then his official time came at 4.52 and tied for fourth among the linebackers. He also was a top performer in the vertical jump with 39.5-inches. That tied for fifth among all linebackers. He did 10-feet even in the broad jump.
Rodriguez did not do the cone drill, 5-10-5, or bench press. He also did not participate in the field drills. He will do all of those at his Pro Day on the Oklahoma State campus on Thursday, March 24.
Rodriguez led the Big 12 in tackles with 130, 76 were unassisted. He also had 14.5 tackles-for-loss and three sacks.
Rodriguez had a key interception in the second half of the 37-35 win over No. 5 Notre Dame in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. He also broke up five passes, had 10 quarterback hurries, recovered two fumbles, and forced four fumbles.
The native of Wagoner, Okla., was a captain the past two seasons and finished his Oklahoma State career with 409 total tackles.
Running back Jaylen Warren ran and drilled on Friday evening and was measured at 5-8 and a svelte 208-pounds. He ran a 4.55 in the forty, about middle of the pack for the running backs. Warren had a 29 7/8ths-inches arm measurement and a 9 ¼-inches on the hand measurement. Also in the testing, Warren had a 31.5-inches vertical jump and a 9’11” broad jump.
Cowboys safety Kolby Harvell-Peel will run his forty and go through testing on Sunday late afternoon and early evening.
