Littell and Cowgirls Win to Keep the Season Going Another Day
Oklahoma State 11-year head coach Jim Littell got the best honor any outgoing coach could receive as his team fought tooth and nail and used a 22-11 third quarter to overcome a 34-28 halftime lead to come back and eliminate No. 8 seed Texas Tech 73-58 in the first night of the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship and Littell and the Cowgirls stay on to play another day.
It was announced that Littell, in his 11th year as head coach and 17th overall with the school had mutually agreed to step aside for the betterment of the program. Littell was the Big 12 Coach of the Year a season ago and his team went to the second round of the NCAA Tournament losing to eventual champion Stanford.
On this night there were three Cowgirls Taylen Collins with 14 points and 12 rebounds, Lexy Keys with 19 points and three assists, and Lauren Fields with 22 points that accounted for 55 of the team’s 73 points. OSU outshot Tech 43 percent to 40 percent and forced 19 turnovers that resulted in an advantage in points off turnovers and fast break points.
Oklahoma State has now beaten Texas Tech, that had OSU transfer Vivian Gray on their squad, three times this season. The Cowgirls are 9-19 on the season and will play top seed Baylor in the second game on the schedule tomorrow afternoon in the tournament quarterfinals.
