STILLWATER – According to a report from Stadium basketball analyst Jeff Goodman, Cowboy head coach Mike Boynton is not among the leading candidates for the vacancy at his alma mater, South Carolina.
While nothing is official, it should certainly allow Oklahoma State fans to breathe a little bit easier now.
The Gamecocks parted ways with long-time head coach Frank Martin last week, which led to intense speculation that Boynton could be on his way to Columbia, SC to become the next head coach. Boynton played for the Gamecocks from 2000-2004, then served on the coaching staff for four seasons.
Boynton currently makes $2.1 million a year in Stillwater, and would owe 75% of the remaining contract should he leave for another job within three years of signing the contract, which he signed following the 2020-21 season.
A source told Pokes Report last week that the buyout to his contract would be more than $13 million, a price tag that is sure to cause most programs, apparently including South Carolina, to second guess trying to poach Boynton away from Stillwater.
During his five years in Stillwater, Boynton has amassed an 87-73 overall record, 39-51 in Big 12 play, making it to the Big 12 championship game and the second round of the NCAA tournament during the 2020-21 season, a team which was led by future No. 1 NBA Draft pick, Cade Cunningham.
