Kam Farrar Hits the Transfer Portal

STILLWATER – Cowboy red-shirt junior linebacker Kamryn Farrar (5-11, 210) out of Dallas (Skyline), Texas put his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal on Monday following the end of Oklahoma State’s spring football. Farrar has been a back-up linebacker since red-shirting his freshman season in 2019. He did play two games that season and had one unassisted tackle.

The speedy Farrar played in 10 games in 2020 and finished with six tackles, five unassisted in the COVID-19 season. This past season he played in all 14 games, primarily on special teams, but some at linebacker and had 13 tackles with 2.5 sacks. His first sack came against Missouri State and then he was involved in 1.5 sacks against TCU.

This spring Farrar was hoping to get in position for more playing time. He had kind of been in former defensive coordinator Jim Knowles’ doghouse for not always being assignment sound. He had a fresh start with new coordinator Derek Mason coming in and a new position coach in Joe Bob Clements.

Farrar had a solid spring and made several tackles in The Spring Finale in Boone Pickens Stadium on Saturday. However, his play was behind that of expected starters in transfer Xavier Benson, who started a season at linebacker at Texas Tech; true junior Mason Cobb, and another junior college transfer Lamont Bishop, who passed Farrar last spring.

Young linebackers Nickolas Martin, Jeff Roberson, Donovan Stephens, and new freshman Gabe Brown also had springs that moved them forward in playing plans.

No idea on where Farrar will land, but he will as he has good physical skills. He is a bit small, but that is not as much of an issue in today’s game defending spread offenses. It was 247 Sports that first reported Farrar going into the portal.

After the spring (game?) I think we shouldn't be surprised if we have a few hit the portal looking for more on the field or starting time.

after the spring "game", I think we should have players with a clear understanding of what they need to do to improve and get themselves on the field.

I expect NONE of them to hit the transfer portal... that is the quitters way out, and a sure pathway to a lower division of competition.

Players must enter the portal before May 1 this year to be eligible to play at their new school next fall/winter. So if we are going to have anymore go they will have to do so this week.

I respectfully disagree…these players are putting in the work and making great plays, but OSU keeps bringing in players in the same position. That can be very discouraging for a young adult. I wouldn't call them a quitter.

all good... but just curious, what term would you use to refer to a kid that leaves the program simply because of perceived competition (or added competition) for a position?

I view the portal more like pro-baseball farm team levels. I think people are going to move up and down the levels of play (majors/AA/etc.) and (in some cases) get at least the fun of playing/competing and, at most (Jelani), the gain of developing with more playing time/usage. The teams that will mainly profit off the portal (absent illegal or unusual NIL affects) will be the OSU's, Tennessee's, Oregon's and Auburn's of the Power 5 doing pull ups gains (due to being well resourced and/or semi-blue blood successful teams of late); along with the Tulsa, SMU, Syracuse and North Dakota's doing the fall down rescues (strong developmental schools with less internal talent but also NFL draft successes). As an outcome, you have a lot of fan upset (why are they leaving us!!) but also a stronger product on the field at many schools (Sills/Tay Martin/J. Warren), and as the marginal, frustrated players who take the portal risk and guess wrong lose out and open up more recruiting spots/opportunities.

Personally, I think your description of the portal is way off and not accurately stated.

1) it's not like a farm system, because the teams actually own their farm systems, they pay their contracts, and they share/benefit in the player development, and also own the players (contracts). College football is nothing like a farm system.

2) the big teams are the winners and teams like OSU and especially like Tulsa are the big-time losers. Always. If OSU was picking up OLine kids shed by the Bama's and UGA's of the world, I might agree with you, but we're not, we're getting kids that some other team spent time developing and now lost off of their investment. That holds especially true for a team like Tulsa where their best kids, like Player, leave their teams in the lurch with no recourse for those teams.... their off to the highest bidder.

Look at the top QB transfers, the Bama kid to OU, the tOSU kid to LSU, etc... the top transfers still end up going to the top programs. The Bama's and UGA's of the world NEED to shed some of their old 4 and 5 star kids that did not pan out, because they have more of them coming in than they have room for. If we could land kids like that, then you might be on to something.

3) this more like unregulated free agency, where we lose kids to the highest bidder (like our LSU loss).

I'm happy that some kids are benefitting, but MOST are not, they are simply loosing their football opportunities to false pretense and faux promises. Most of the kids in the portal will never get another opportunity to play.

The old Grad-transfer program was working just fine, but when you combine the Portal with NIL, then college football is in a death spiral.
