STILLWATER – Oklahoma State saw the first commitment from the work put in this past weekend as Dallas (South Oak Cliff), Texas edge rusher Billy Walton III made his pledge to the Cowboys known at noon on April 26 with a post on Twitter.

Walton III is a very talented athlete who has offers from 21 schools. Among the schools that offered the 6-4, 222-pound Walton are Texas, Texas A&M, Tennessee, TCU, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech, Arizona, Kansas State and Louisville.

Walton III was one of seven prospects that was on an official visit this past weekend (April 22-24) for the Orange Power Weekend, The Spring Finale and the Cowboys Orange Blitz for recruits and former players. The whole weekend was a success with head coach Mike Gundy, director of recruiting Todd Bradford, and the whole staff putting a lot of work in on the events. It had to help with Walton III that his cousin is Cowboys starting cornerback Jabbar Muhammad.

Muhammad spent time with his cousin, but his player host was defensive end Collin Oliver. Walton’s family was here with his father Billy Walton II and mother Najmah both attending. Oklahoma State was his first official visit, but he had been to SMU, TCU, Texas, and several other schools on unofficial visits.

Walton III was a key player for the Golden Bears as they went 15-1 last season earning the Texas Class 5A-Division II State Championship. Walton finished the season with 55 tackles, 21 tackles-for-loss and 12 sacks.

He is a more athletic edge rusher that uses speed, technique and a high motor to dominate opponents. He is relentless in his pursuit of a ball carrier or a quarterback. It is also special that Walton III has experience and is quite comfortable playing as a linebacker at the second level. In that position he is a mystery to opposing quarterbacks whether he is going to drop in pass coverage or creep up and crash off the edge to disrupt the play.

While he is light for his position currently, he has the frame at 6-4 and with a large upper body to put on more muscle. His core and lower body also appear to be ready for him to get bigger at the college level. By appearance he looks like a player that will play at somewhere around 240-250 pounds.

Walton III also showed his skills along with several of his South Oak Cliff teammates last summer at an Oklahoma State one-day prospect camp. Walton III, among other impressive tests, showed a 34-inch vertical jump.

Walton III becomes the sixth commitment to the Cowboys in the 2023 class and joins defensive end Jaedon Foreman of Del City, Okla. and safety Kam Franklin of Oak Grove, La. on the defensive side in that class. Ironically, both Foreman and Franklin were also on their official visits the same weekend.
