Mike Boynton Named USA Basketball U18 Assistant Coach

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton has been named an assistant coach for the USA Basketball U18 team this summer.

It was announced by USA Basketball Friday morning.

This will be Boynton’s second stint with USA Basketball as he was a court coach for the 2021 U19 team training camp last summer. That team went on to win gold at the FIBA U19 World Cup.

He’ll be coaching under head coach Tad Boyle, who’s currently the head coach at the University of Colorado. Along side Boynton as the second assistant coach will be Leon Rice, the head coach at Boise State.

The three court coaches during training camp will be Matt Langel of Colgate, Rob Lanier of SMU and Tommy Lloyd of Arizona.

“Working with this coaching staff is an opportunity for me to grow professionally, and for us to grow professionally together,” Boyle said in the release. “That's what is great about these kinds of experiences. I've had two of them previously with John Calipari and Danny Manning and Mark Few and Mike Brown. So having the opportunity to learn and grow with Leon and Mike is something that I look forward to as well.”

During his first five seasons in Stillwater, Boynton has compiled 87 wins, including 39 coming in Big 12 play.

According to the release put out by USA Basketball, a fact I was unaware of, Oklahoma State has finished in the top five of the Big 12 in back-to-back seasons, marking the first time that’s happened for the Pokes since 2005.

I wish he had declined and focused on what he's getting paid for..... maybe he's not aware of the dire condition of the program.

Boynton likely not only grows personally from these stints, but also may enhance our recruiting and just market our program (and himself). Cal, I think with what we have returning and recruited, the Cowboys might make a March Madness invite. It's getting to where Boynton will be making an important turn, either up or down. He's had time to stabilize this program, lived through the unfair NCAA probation exile and now must make some type of showing. If not this year, I'm concerned his recruiting will begin to taper off. A good BB coach can only succeed with enough talented folks on the floor.

sorry 72, I think you're just making excuses for him, like everybody else seems to do.

you only need a few kids to make a successful team... Sutton use to only rotate 8, most coaches do not rotate many more than that.

We were NOT impacted by the postseason ban, that's just one more excuse being afforded to him for failure. We went to the dance when it mattered (Cade's year), 2020 cancelled season we were not really being considered to make the dance, and last year we weren't good enough to make the dance anyway. I mean, maybe... maybe if we had a strong run in the B12 tourney, but that was highly unlikely.

We didn't get banned from anything, and we brought in tons of high-level recruits during the years that the penalty was hanging over our heads.

The coach needs to get his butt busy focusing on his freaking job.

how many kids did he pull in off of the last under 18 squad he helped with? You people are killing me with these excuses.

Here's a "better way" to help our team; spend your time recruiting kids that can play THIS SEASON, and then spend your time coming up with ways to make THIS TEAM better.

It would help our team tremendously if he would actually spend time with them, coaching and evaluating them.

it won't matter how rich any environment is if we have another dismal season like the last 5.

you guys.... we finished 6th in the conference, and had a 15-15 record, and half of that team bailed out. For gosh sakes, why is everybody so nonchalant about the unforgivable dire straights of the basketball program?
