Oklahoma State's Season Comes to an End With 7-3 Loss to Arkansas
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State’s late comeback effort came up short as the season comes to an end as the Pokes lose to Arkansas, 7-3.
With the loss, the Cowboys’ season comes to an end, and they finish 42-22 on the year.
Ryan Bogusz was credited with the loss after he gave up four earned runs on three hits, with five strikeouts and two walks in a little over three innings of work.
After giving up two more runs in the top of the ninth, it all came down to the bottom of the ninth for the Cowboys. Zach Ehrhard led things off for the Pokes, who flew out to right field for the first out of the inning.
Jake Thompson struck out on four pitches, which brought Griffin Doersching to the plate with a chance to extend the game. He battled back fouling off several pitches, but Arkansas pitcher Hagen Smith was able to get the best of him as Doersching struck out looking.
It was a slow start to the game for the Cowboys, who had scored 65 runs in the previous four games. The Cowboys recorded four hits in the first five innings, but were held scoreless, while giving up five hits and five runs in the first five innings.
Ryan Bogusz got the start for the Pokes and lasted a touch over three innings, while giving up four runs on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
He was relieved by Hueston Morrill, who faced just two hitters, before being relieved by Victor Mederos. Mederos went three innings, giving up one unearned run on just two hits, while striking out five and hitting two batters.
It was David Mendham who started things off for the Pokes with a solo shot to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut into Arkansas’ lead, 5-1.
Caeden Trenkle got on base with a single into left field early in his at-bat in the bottom of the seventh, which was immediately followed by a single by Chase Adkison. Roc Riggio scored Trenkle from second and advanced Adkison to third with a ground-rule double to get the Pokes within three, 5-2.
That was followed by a sacrifice fly into right field by Zach Ehrhard to score Adkison from third. Jake Thompson moved Riggio over to third with a sac grounder to first base, which brought Griffin Doersching to the plate. However, that was the end of the threat as Doersching flew out to deep center for the third out.
Things started to get chippy in the top of the eighth between Lanzilli and Mendham as Campbell kept throwing over to first to keep Lanzilli in check. So much so that the first base umpire issued warnings to both sides.
With one out and Lanzilli on first, Jalen Battles drove the ball into right field, which advanced Lanzilli to third. The initial call was he was safe at third as McLean issued the tag a second too late, but Lanzilli’s foot came off the bag, resulting in the second out of the inning. Campbell recorded he second strikeout for the third out to get out of the inning.
David Mendham singled into right field to start the bottom half of the eighth inning, which prompted a pitching change by Arkansas. Nolan McLean was walked with the next at-bat but was thrown out at second on a fielder’s choice, which advanced Mendham over to third.
Brett Brown pinch hit for Caeden Trenkle and was walked, bringing Adkison up to the plate.
With the bases loaded, Roc Riggio struck out swinging to end the inning.
Campbell recorded a strikeout to start the top of the ninth out on the right foot but gave up a standup double to Webb at the top of the order. He then strikes out Slavens and walks Wallace to put runners on first and second. Catcher Michael Turner hit a ball into right field, which was misplayed by Ehrhard, scoring both Webb and Wallace to put Arkansas back up by four, 7-3.
The Cowboys had a chance in the bottom of the ninth, but just came up short.
