Big 12 Media Picks Cowboys Third, Baylor to Win Conference in Football
STILLWATER – The Big 12 Conference has released it’s preseason media poll for football. The ballots were sent out to registered members of rhe media for the upcoming 2022 Big 12 Football Media Days in Arlington, Texas at AT&T Cowboys Stadium on July 13 and 14, 2022.
Pokes Report will staff the Big 12 Football Media Days with three reporters including myself, Zachary Lancaster, and Emma Lightfoot. We will have multiple stories and videos including the opening address from new conference commissioner Brett Yormark and from all of the head coaches and players in attendance. Oklahoma State will have head coach Mike Gundy wirh players in Spencer Sanders (QB), Tyler Lacy (DE), Brock Martin (DE) and Brennan Presley (slot). We will have thorough reports on their day in Arlington on Wednesday, July 13.
The media picked Oklahoma State third, but it is obvious by the first-place votes and the point talley that it was close for the top three spots with Baylor (picked first), Oklahoma (picked second) and Oklahoma State. A perfect point total for first place would have been 410 points and for second it would have been 369 points, third would have been 328 points. The Bears led by Dave Aranda and coming off a 12-2 Big 12 Championship and Sugar Bowl season got the nod from more of the media members. Oklahoma and new head coach Brent Venables and new quarterback in transfer Dillon Gabriel were just back 11 points.
Dean of Big 12 head coaches Mike Gundy and his squad including All-Big 12 quarterback Spencer Sanders that went 12-2 and lost to Baylor in the Big 12 tital game but rebounded for a 37-35 win in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl over Notre Dame were 23 points behind Baylor in third.
There was a major break between third and fourth of 53 points back to Texas. Kansas State was next followed by Iowa State, who received one first place vote, then TCU, West Virginia, Texas Tech, and Kansas.
The Jayhawks came as close to perfect in the polla s any team as they had 48 points, just seven above what would have been unanimous at 10th in the voiting.
Actual Media Poll and Voting for 2022 Big 12 Preseason Football Poll 1. Baylor (17 1st place votes) 365 pts. 2. Oklahoma (12) 354 pts. 3. Oklahoma State (9) 342 pts. 4. Texas (2) 289 pts. 5, Kansas State 261 pts. 6. Iowa State (1) 180 pts. 7. TCU 142 pts. 8. West Virginia 147 pts. 9. Texas Tech 119 pts. 10. Kansas 48 pts. Points are based on votes with a first place vote worth 10 pts. and a last place vote worth 1 pt. There were 41 total ballots turned in. |
Below is my poll and without comments it is exactly the order that I sent it in. I honestly feel that Baylor, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma are all very close. I think anyone of those three could win the conference. I gave the nod to Oklahoma State with veteran quarterback play, veteran coaching, and a defense that I believe will be much closer to last season’s Cowboy defense than most people believe.
I also flip-flopped Kansas State and Texas. I believe the Wildcats are the best sleeper team in the conference and Texas is again destined for a disappointing season, something that is becoming the norm in Austin.
I also had Texas Tech and TCU reversed. I know TCU may have more returning veteran players, but I believe there is a stronger vibe and culture toward winning at Texas Tech than at TCU. I believe new Frogs coach Sonny Dykes has more work to do in that area than new Tech head coach Joey McGuire.
Robert Allen’s Preseason Big 12 Football Ballot |
1. | Oklahoma State | Spencer Sanders back at quarterback with lots of young weapons and an offensive line that needs to come together. If anyone thinks defense will be down, then I think they will be wrong. |
2. | Baylor | Blake Shapen had best be the guy because outside of offensive line, there are questions. Defense will be very good with Ika (NG), Doyle (LB), Walcott (CB), and Morgan (FS) leading the way. |
3. | Oklahoma | Venables is a better fit as HC at OU than Riley, and as a Sooner fan would say that opinion is coming from an “Aggie”. Still Oklahoma has lost talent from a year ago. Defense more of a concern than offense. |
4. | Kansas State | Be very careful because is QB Adrian Martinez works out as well as I think he will, the Wildcats could be in Arlington in December. Lots of playmakers and good defensive returnees. |
5. | Texas | Call me biased. I won’t believe it until I see it. Texas is overrated and most importantly within their own building and minds. Anybody but me suspect over a QB (Quinn Ewers) that skipped his senior HS season and hasn’t played a game snap since. |
6. | Iowa State | The Cyclones lost a lot, but the culture and cause survived. I think Dekkers will be good in time and there are returnees including offensive line. Defense can build around DE McDonald and LB Vance. |
7. | Texas Tech | Big uptick in attitude with Joey McGuire as head coach, but this program is a ways off from a talent standpoint. Houston and at NC State represent a tough non conference slate. |
8. | West Virginia | I’m rooting for Neal Brown, I really like Brown and feel he is the best man to lead WVU. He will need a break or two this season or some more patience because defense is light. QB J.T. Daniels could ignite big help if he is ready quick. |
9. | TCU | Tough to put the Horned Frogs here because they return more than any school in the conference in starters, but those same guys went 5-7/3-6 in Big 12 last season. Maybe change from Patterson to Dykes changes the way they perform. |
10. | Kansas | Beware Big 12 and not just Texas. Kansas is still picked down here, but they are capable of beating just about any team that choses to take the week off when they play the Jayhawks. |
